I can't work my way around the intricate contours of the BOF web site. I am looking for the Guideline that defines what a Badge Event is. I can see the Rules and the Appendices but I can't see the Guidelines.
In particular I would like to be reminded about the J courses etc. as we haven't run an event with these before... or at least I haven't done results for one.
Please help me relocate.
Thanks

Badge? or Regional?
Delighted to see that the Badge event lives! I thought it had been replaced by some 'Regional' nonsense...
(Even if you do have to be a maze-solver to find it...)

Orienteering is Fun!
So let's have more Fun for more Feet in more Forests!

Basically they equate as follows:
JM/JW1 = White (M/W10B technical standard)
JM/JW2 = Yellow (M/W10A technical standard)
JM/JW3 = Orange (M/W12A technical standard)
JM/JW4 = Light Green (M/W14A technical standard)
JM/JW5S = Green (approx equivalent to W16A)
JM5M/JW5L = Blue (approx equivalent to M16A/W18A)
JM5L = Brown (approx equivalent to M18A)
equivalences in brackets are what you might get at National events, but some distances (e.g. M14A) might be a bit different.

Thanks. A classic navigation error.. I ran into Members->Rules->Rules so overshot Members->Rules->Guidelines. I should have been checking my pacing.
I can see all these funny JM5[LMS] and JW5[LS] courses but also V's and N's. I can guess what a V or N stand for but I can't see it defined in the guidelines.
What is a V or and N? And more specifically do they have Badge times and if so are these calculated from L, S times or are they independent.
Finally, it says Badge Event at the top... doesn't say Regional Event.
TIA,
SLOWie

Are we allowed to discriminate on stature?

My point exactly!
I personally prefer the term 'Badge' to 'Regional' - it has more useful content - but if we have decided to change it, we ought to change all instances in our electronic work of reference. It can't be that difficult to 'find' and 'replace'.

The biggest problem with "Regional" and "District" is you have to know which is bigger to work out which is which. Brain goes something like - ah yes a district is smaller than a region therefore there will be a brown course...
Old dog new tricks? After all badge event doesn't really tell you much about what courses there will be, just that there are badges on offer!

Simon you are obviously very good at navigation and are always very helpful when people ask for help to find things on the web site.
Thanks it's so much nicer than some responses.

When they had these courses at the JK 2005, there were no badge times. M21V was 6km (255m climb) and M21N was 5.2km (145m). As a comparison, M21L was 10.7km (425m)M21S was 8.1km (265m).
At the EA champs the other week I think M21N was the same as the Red course (i.e TD3) This was also the case at the JK. I don't think M21V was offered, but I guess it would have been the same as another TD5 course. At the JK it was combined with W21S M18S W18L.

The V and N courses are in the table on page 4 of the guidelines (Guideline B: Badge events, iss 1, June 03).
M21V: course 5 (TD5, length ratio 0.45) ie M65L etc
M21N: course 9 (TD3, length ratio 0.50) ie Red
W21V: course 7 (TD5, length ratio 0.32) ie W65L etc
W21N: course 10 (TD3, length ratio 0.35) ie new course!

Wow... and I thought Micro-O rules were complex...
If the N and V courses don't qualify for badges isn't there a risk that these competitors will miss out on the motivation to get Bronze, Silver, Gold and then Championship badges?
Or is the Badge Scheme dead?
I presume the J[MW][1-4] and J[MW]5s get badges?
