I heard some very sad news tonight that Eric Langmuir of BASOC passed away peacefully on Sunday night.
He was a great guy, always helpful and friendly, he had time for everyone.
I'm sure he will be missed by many many folk, and my thoughts go out to Marion and Eric's family at what must be a really tough time.
Maybe BASOC/SOA can remember him with a memorial trophy or something similar at one of their events in future.
Ali Robertson.

Eric's book "Mountain Leadership" was my Bible for many years (I have two copies, the first dating from 1969) and he became a bit of a hero of mine in my youth.
So I was delighted to find myself working closely with him for WOC99 and had the privilege of enjoying his legendary hospitality at his wonderful house also.
I too was very sad to hear the news - he had so much more to give.
Eric was a very fine orienteer, a superb host and, above all, a true gentleman.

Really sad news. It was only two weeks ago that Eric drew up my map and started me at Loch Vaa.
I'll raise the issue of memorial with the SOA exec.

Can't agree more. Eric made much more happen than his contribution to orienteering. He is a legend in outdoor sport in Scotland.

It was a really inspirational obituary. I didn't know him but Ally did and also he rescued my mum when she broke her ankle in Northern Ireland.
I felt very humble when I read about his life, and it reminded me of Judy Buckley too. These are people who really lived their lives to the fullest and followed their dreams and I hope we can all try to do the same.

Can't put it in better words than Ewan. He was a great guy and a source of encouragement to all. I had the great pleasure of sitting in the club tent chatting with Eric, Marion, Eric's daughter and grand-daughter for an hour or so on the last day of the 6-day this summer. We talked about everything, from the courses that day to things happening away from orienteering. I'll remember him as someone who had time for everyone especially when it came to encouraging people in the great outdoors. Let a bit of him live on in all of us.
