Meroc Long-O

Maybe some other clubs could do something similar next year (SYO and WCH certainly could).

Made me think that Aire ought to have a go at another Leeds City Long-O. LUOC did one back in the early eighties, linking 7 urban areas in North Leeds together for a course of about 25k (won by Gareth Bryan-Jones if I remember correctly), Aire following up with another a few years later based on 3 Airedale areas on Leeds/Bradford boundary.

Certainly was great doing something different: events I've enjoyed the most this year have been this, the Battersea Sprint-O, Mytchett Medium distance race, and some early season night events. After 35 years of too many bog standard events, I need something like this to get the juices flowing again!

BTW, thank goodness for a Camelback on Sunday - wouldn't have finished without it.

Southampton normally have a New Forest Long-O, pretty good as well

WIM put it on this year, at Irons Well, and I think we are putting it on again next year - beginning of March I think. I expect more details will be forthcoming before shortly before Christmas.

despite having a camelbak i experienced a gradual loss of all physical capabilites during the event. a late start was not a good idea, and a total time of 3hrs 40min was hardly the peak of my career! however it was 'pleasing' to find that my girlfriend had managed faster minutes per km on the 12km course! Time to start training (or my version of it) again, but too late for the elite i've entered myself for at kilnsey!

Nice one to MEROC for trying something different. Really enjoyed it as a good long run. That first drinks point was a long way though! Guess it would be hard for MEROC to do it again without the course being almost exactly the same... Maybe some other clubs could do something similar next year (SYO and WCH certainly could).

LOG and RAFO have a weekend planned (day 1 relay/ day 2 Long-o) in january. The areas are close to the A1.

NGOC did one a few years ago but it was a little overplanned not too many completed it, the weather was hot then and I think there was one too many Forest of Dean Climb

Did anyone else who did this event get any nasty reaction to the vegetation? I made the big mistake of trying to run in shorts. Despite giving up very early on, my legs are in a real mess. Something has given me a nasty rash with fairly large blisters forming in the middle of the rash. One at the back of my knee makes walking painful.
The only plant I know of native to this country which can produce this sort of reaction is giant hogweed but I didn't notice any of that out there.
Perhaps one the Doctors out there could given me some advice?
BTW, I liked the idea of the event in principal but was a bit disappointed with how grotty the area was. I certainly won't be running there in shorts again!

Did anyone enjoy the first part (Birkdale) of the course as little as me? I put out/collected the controls in that area, and quite frankly I haaated it. Far too much rough stuff...regretted going out in shorts

I have the same problem. Ran in shorts and now have significant patches of blisters running (if you'll excuse the pun) down both legs (on the outside of each leg where I have obviously rubbed against something). I seem to recall there was a similar problem after running at Pembrey many, many years ago?

Just to keep you in the picture BAOC are planning a Long O and MBO event in early Jan 06, perhaps the 2nd. They intend using the following Areas; Ash Ranges, Mychett, WindMill Hill, Long Valley, Barossa, Star Post and Sandhurst. I believe they intend to link part of the way utilising the Basingstoke Canal. Allan Farrington and EMIT should be confirming if its a viable proposition in the near future.

Final decision on the RAFO / LOG Long O will be made this week , with details of the event put onto the websites of both clubs next weekend (24th September 05). We are currently awaiting permission form 1 more landowner before going firm on the event. Expect 22km+, with no more than 1km being out of the forests Come along and have a weekend of fun in Lincolnshire.
