Orienteering in a Bestseller

The above quote is from P. 496 of a novel I have just read. Can anyone identify the book? Clue: the author is a fairly famous Swedish crime writer.

Also and this has nothing to do with novels - orienteering is also mentioned on the Met office web site as an activity for which their site is useful to check the forecasted weather.

Yes it is Henning Mankell! I really enjoy his books because of their insights on Swedish life and descriptions of the unique countryside, especially his evocation of the forests. The one with the quote is The Return of the Dancing Master which I thought better than the White Lioness and have just finished. Dancing Master is set further north; north west and inland from the location of next year's o'ringen around a place called Sveg. The heroes of his book are angst laden police officers. They have a lot more though than the average murder mystery tale.

There is also a quite entertaining description of orienteering on The Chase (+ the methods he used to get out of it) in Martin Johnson's autobiography. Probably good thing he didn't take up the sport since rugby would have been much poorer without him.

Yep! He was a member of Harlequins - do you think that had an effect on his choice of future sport!

I e-mailed BOF in the hope the marketting dept would make some capital out of it after the world cup victory - you know - the sport to tough for Martin johnson - but they didn't do anything with it - shame it's history now.

interestingly - he goes on to say it's the sort of thing he'd love to do with his kids now - so where does he live now - which club area? Take him at his word and invite him and his family to an event.
