race 1 is at Cold Ash, Hermitage, Newbury
race 2 is TBA
race 3 is Pen Rhiw Wen (New Area?)
race 4 is SE Lakes
race 5 is Whitbarrow Scar
race 6 is Furnace Wood & Woolbeding, Midhurst
(sorry lizi, British on your 18th)
race 7 is Ilkley
race 8 is Cawthorne
the final will be intresting, ardchattan maybe? or that area that was used 2 years back, collie nathias (i think).
Its intresting that this year the FCC has 3 'weekends' rather than 2 like last year, but are more spread out.

i think the middle final is Creag Mhic Chalien, used for BOC96 and SOC98 or thereabouts. last i heard the long hadn't been decided. could well be on creag mhic as well or else coille nathais (BOC Relays). Airds Park (SOC Relays)is the other good area near oban but someone has just bought the middle third of it and dont want orienteering on it.
hopefully not ardchattan when theres so much more which is relevant for jwoc.

Creag Mhic's not very relevant to JWOC... better idea to go to Anagach or somewhere like that. But Creag Mhic would make a great race... well remember some great days out there planning British Champs way back when.....

No areas are decided yet for race 4 or race 9. Some poor sod's got to find them - lets see - JOK chasing sprint: probably my problem . SOA middle distance race: that would be me again .
More helpfully...
Long final is indeed Creag Mhic. There might be a better area in Britain, but I haven't been there.
Chasing Sprint - maybe Ulpha Fell or Simpson Ground.
Middle Final will be "somewhere between Glasgow and Oban". There is some talk of this being the BEOC champs as well. Sorry Gross, we wont ask folk to drive from Anagach to Creag Mhic

WOC2024 Edinburgh

Ok, thanks Mharky. Its such a mixed bunch, 2 open moors, 2 i presume fast southern areas, 2 lakes, cawthorne, which will be tough, and i've no idea what the other swansea bay race maybe. It will take a good orienteer to do well at them all.

Simpson Ground - chasing crawl? Good area but not perhaps first choice for a fast and furious race?
Pen Rhiw Wen 2000 - serious windchill down to about -12 I seem to remember. The only time I've ever orienteered in a helly and a cag and not got way too hot! Took an hour before I considered lowering the zip on the neck a little. Foggy and vis down to about 10m - my best ever result on M21L national (3rd). May come over if somebody can promise the same weather!

Simpson Ground is all in the planning. Despite the huge amount of felling there are still some great bits, aswell as the open fell on the end which though technically isn't as challenging but definitely speedy. It'll be cool!
Will? We've got proper fire now!

I hope the north bit that was used for lakeside last year is used, that was good!

Pen Rhiw Wen
Might not be a new area but it will be to most as very few people attended the National, and then a number of those that did, did not run. The weather was awful, early starts were definitely an advantage. The wind blew the IT tent down right at the end. The only time my other half won a National-only competitor I think on M45S. I believe they had another event on the area a while ago and again it was poorly attended. Great place in nice weather but definite risk assessment if poor. Hopefully no gales this time.
