In the mid 80's, BBC TV were persuaded to put a 5 minute slot promoting orienteering on the local news. My club organised a mock event for the cameras mid week, I took the afternoon off school to help run the event. The brief was to set up a few controls in the more photogenic part of the woods. A star orienteer from another club (Tony Burton I think) was to be interviewed by Tony Wale, the BBC bloke, whilst in the middle of a "race". However he got stuck in traffic or something so they needed an emergency stand in. Since everyone else was over 60 or under 10 that had to be me .
"Just run through the woods pretending to be in a race and leap out of the bush here" they said. So I did, and Tony Wale appeared with his microphone. There were a few questions about orienteering and lots about Watford Football Club. I was very nervious and drivelled endlessly. All this wouldn't have been too bad if it wasn't for the o suit: - too tatty, too smelly, too muddy, too tight and definately too short. And I think I was even wearing bramble bashers.
When it was on the telly I went fishing.

If you count it as orienteering, at lagganlia i started on what i was told was a 1.2km track run. So started running, was told that i would cross a track crossing and pass a junction, and the finish timer would be about 100m further on. So i crossed the crossing and passed the junction and went about 100m. just before a bend in the path i saw some tapes leading off into the terrain. Because i had expected to see the finish i wondered whether i had to run into the forest and had missed an instruction, so followed the tapes. About 200m in, it was evident i was wrong, and so turned back and got to the track to find just around the corner the finish timer was there with those who had started before me. We then waited for the others to finish and ian, the timer, said ' ok, the next exercise is a terrain run, which starts at the tapes just back along the track around the corner.'

Loosing a SI Card within a 100m section of Beaudesert, spending over 90 unsuccessful minutes looking for it, and meating dad on the way back to the assembly, who had aquired a map from an event official and was comming out to look for me.

What about another White Rose relay. Kept telling my M10 son not to mispunch. He had a stormer, I went out had a really good run, colapsed on the line and handed si card to son to download. He was back quickly and in front of all our club members he told me very vocally that I had misspunched twice. Strange how things run in the family isn't it Mrs H.

JOK Chasing Sprint earlier this year, I'd had 2 pretty shocking runs, but on the final run-in I punched the last control just behind Tom Winsor. I've got a fair bit of speed on the run-ins so I thought I can get him here, 10m into the 150m I stepped in a rabbit hole and did a full on flip in front of the watching crowd. I walked the rest of the run-in...and to add insult, I injured my knee in the process. That was wonderful.
