Although Im a PC man I would say looking at what you want to do go for a Mac....
If you want to go PC - I would avoid all the cheapo brands and stay with the Sony,Dell,Toshiba,IBM etc makes, as if it goes wrong after 2-3 years you have more chance of getting it fixed.
Id recomend the Dell Latitude D610 - or one of there trendy Inspiron 9300s if you dont mind the weight.
You can spec them to exactly what you want.

agree wth dover, i will be buying one soon, though i'm going for the ikkle 12" screen i think.
as for dell, they do shift a hilariously large amount of laptops, but they can be often prone to problems it seems. (e.g. battery chargers getting hot and blowing up). some of the sony's are pretty sweet, but i reckon the mac is best, especially for the movie editing and battery life. i think the macs use different technology (solid state?), so lower power consumption and lower noise.

Ive put it over 200 dells over the last 5 years both laptops, desktops and servers and have had very few problems (in fact none in the last 2 years).
If you want long term reliability from dell go for the Latitude range rather than Inspiron as they are designed for intensive day in day out business use
However I think if you can afford it Id go for a Apple , particularly because of the vid editing.
Know anybody going to the US who can get you one....

yeah, fair enough, i wasn't saing they are rubbish, as they cleary do produce the goods for a lot of people- i have a dell at the moment (an old inspiron) and it is fine, just a bit knackared out, i make it work very hard day in day out, i think it just can't quite cope cause of age. the probems with dell all seem to happen to colleagues! (sp?). my dad has actually just got a rather slinky new dell- one of the ones which is a laptop but you can clip into a desk attachment for extra disk space.
i think the main good thing with macs is their software.

I think a few years back Dell had overheating problems (I know somebody who does Dell PR) but I think they've sorted them now.
