Control codes on map
I like the idea of putting control codes next to the relevant checkpoint numbers. I have enough difficulty thinking about the route without having to memorise three-figure numbers too! A small font would be fine, too.

Care does need to be taken in positioning lines and control circles and numbers on the map. I was at an event recently when this caused confusion. I know that MDOC have tried changing the colour table at the Twin Peaks last year to make the 'over' printing colour *under* other details such as contours. This minimised problems such as obscuring details but the course was still clear.

This worked very well with the black features, but less well with the brown features. For tired old eyes like mine it was not possible to distinguish between the purple and the brown without there being a gap between them, as done with traditional circle and line cutting. There were certainly a few dot knolls on the rim of some control circles that I was not able to discern while running.
The danger of underprinting is that insufficient attention is given to such detail.
