it has to be noted that brooner has a slightly skewed view of the musical world, as has often been noted by myself and meat market on many an occasion.
the fact is, despite his protestations, i remember how excited brooner was when yellow got to nr2, cos we were playing football at the time, post jirc´s 2000. and i remember him being pretty excited 2 weeeks later when we got back from norway to find that *his* band had a nr1 album.
i think i may be the only person in the world that finds parachutes to be over-emotive. after the minimalism and lyrical simplicity of their early releases i just found it too produced, too precise, and too strongly emotive, it wasn´t convincing.
however with album nr 2 they had changed their sound and i liked them again. i don´t really care about this album, but what i´ve heard of it sounds pretty good.

The conversation on a previous thread ages ago pointed out that "cool" music was music that was not mainstream. As soon as a group become mainstream they can no longer, by definition, be cool.
The fact that Coldplay have had such huge success means that lots of people like their music and think it is good enough to buy. Whether or not you agree is your opinion. Some people don't like them, alot do, and telling those that do that they are wrong is a teenie bit insulting (too strong a word, but I can't think of the right one).
I agree with Rocky - I bought Parachutes late on because I knew Jonny 15 years ago (and he wasn't a "rich boy student"), not because I liked Yellow, Trouble etc when I heard them on the radio. In fact, I didn't really like them at all. Rush of Blood was, IMHO, much, much better. On first listening, X&Y was disappointing but I like it more and more the more I listen to it.
It may not be "cool" to like Coldplay any more, but I do (then again, what would I know, I like Robbie

thats a fair opinion, as it admits that it is good musically, but just doesn't attract a lot of people.

Hee hee. But then that is the perogative of a music fascist! Hideously unfair yup, but banter than many of a friendship is built on!
As for Coldplay, I loved the Blue Room EP, saw them at Glasto the year they broke and thought they were ace. Someone then reworked the best songs off the Blue Room EP into mushy rubbish and Parachutes was born (though I do still like Spies). Since then I kind of lost interest.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

the thing is, music is ace. full stop. you like what you like and don't need to explain yourself to anyone. the music fascists are just people who have heard a LOT of music, and generally know what has been done, who's changed over the years. their actual opinion (like many reviewers) is exactly that, their own. what i'm saying is, if you like girls aloud, don't be ashamed. i'm not. (i know it is not great music- that was mostly made in the 60's and 70's i reckon- but its fun)

i probably was excited that they got success yes, i thought they thoroughly deserved it (although like i say I wish it had been with something better than yellow), but that chris martin (and others such as matt belamy) then went completely up their own arse about their success afterwards is what pisses me off. also i'm more than happy (in some ways) that snow patrol have got huge - they really deserved it for years & years of slogging their guts out on tours and winning tons of fans in the process. however, the constant re-releases and sacking of a founder member is another matter completely...
