Music at events

What are peeps views on having music played over the PA at events, for example immediately before/after the start of a relay? How much of a nuisance/distraction is it?

PA should be used with great care. It can be a real PITA for other people, especially given the sort of lovely places often used for orienteering. There is a case for a commentary, but music? Thats just pollution.

I dont mind incidental music (like start of relay), and noise doesn't put me off any more than trashed cars, neds, clear fell and other types of unpleasant pollution.

So the fact I vote "no" doesn't mean I want music unless I get to choose, in which case you won't want it .

One of the great atmosphere creators at events in Europe is good music & commentary.... nothing beats a good blast of europop.

Problem in UK isn't choice of music but legality... you need to pay a fee to the PRS

I heard a figure of £3000 mentioned for JK2004.... don't know if that is accurate or an urban myth

For orienteering.

A PRS licence is required for the live performance or public playing of copyright music by any means. This includes jukeboxes, CD's, video, radio, TV or live bands and discos.

But when you go to a club or a disco, if the music there isn't live it's going to be off CD, I don't think if you're using a CD you're going to be breaking laws

Just get some rowdy uni students *cough cough to turn a stereo system up loud and then broadcast it out of your flat into the street below - in effect broadcasting to the public but you don't need a bloody licence to do that

In Sweden SOFT made a deal with STIM (swedish equivalent of PRS I guess) for all orienteering events. Wasn't that expensive really, around 20000 kronor for public playing of all copyrighted music on all events in one year.
