A few years ago people used bigger signs with clear
directions now the latest ones have the word 'Orienteering' on them but in such small print that the general public wouldn't notice them and the direction arrows on them are much less clear than the old ones.
As for press publicity - the JK didn't take place as far as the press were concerned.

Local press turned up to day 1 (think John Richards had contacted them) & were looking for some "local" interest - they ended up with a picture of 3 HOCs, me being the token female. Not very exciting i'm afraid.

There are big O signs available from BOF in A2 and A3 sizes as well as the littleones most clubs seem to use. What you should do is use the really large ones as the furthest out signs and then use either the little ones for any subsequent change of direction or the A3 if you want to make it more obvious. They have also just changed the colour scheme on the small ones to make them stand out more, the original ones were crap as you could not make them out until you had passed them.
I was told at the JK that the "feathers" came from Banners-r-us, but cannot find them on any website, does anyone know where I can get one?

Well certainly no-one has bothered to put anything on the BOF website about the Jk in her absence. No wonder the press isn't interested if BOF can't even be bothered to put a link in to the results and may be some pics on their own news page. It's like i never happened - the last mention was the snippets I was feding in. Take the money and run, eh?

I first heard that in the 1960's
The 1969 Midland Championships was held on Bringewood Chase, Herefordshire (Mostly in Haye Park - if you know the area) The start was outside my great uncles house.
He was quite thrilled to have so many folk competing at his place, including some of the former track and field stars that pioneered the sport - he was given a few maps as well - real O maps - two colour. (this is , along with the Blue Peter item in the New Forest - how I got involved in the sport)
He kept going on about the signs on the roads.. Why do they need them?
I did not know about misleading/changed grid refs back then....
BTW - the 1969 competitors found the hills and brambles and dense woodland quite trying - Its a tough area - would love to run there again one day - its HOME!
