Compared with the latest cover of BOF FOCUS which was Mrs Winskill and Craney's lovely athletic bums running away and showing off their lovely camelbacks. Clever advertising for the sport and our sponsors!!
The previous Compass Sport cover was even worse tho
- the cover girl agrees!

its been said so many times - why oh why do compass sport continue to put such complete dogsh*t photos on their front covers?
does the UK's top cycling magazine have a photo of a postman on the front?
does 4-4-2 have a photo of The Duck and Ferret vs The Oak and Ash?
no.
photo's of the elite please, looking fit, competitive and professional.
no disrespect to the active olds who i freely admit keep this sport alive; however surely they must agree with me that they are not exactly front page models. nor am i. but there are plenty of damn good orienteers in this country who would be.

thats a bit harsh, just because he's welsh doesn't mean he's disadvantaged

actually i'm presuming he's welsh.

also if you look closely at it, the people are not actually there, they have been cut and pasted in!!
that has got to bring up some questions, its one thing to use a jobbie photo, its another to make the damn thing up so its jobbie

Now if they'd been really clever - they would have cut and pasted all us old grannies' and grandad's heads onto the bodies of the likes of Helen winskill and Craney's bodies and captioned it - "forget atkins, pilates, cellulite and arthritis - take up orienteering - the secret of eternal youth" people would be paying a fortune and queueing up to join bof then - after all some people pay thousands to have a knee lift

Yes that photo was jack. Time for compass sport to wake up and use some decent cover shots.
Talking of which, Middleditch has followed a modelling career in the recent past.

I disagree with you there. I think there's too much about the Elites in Compass Sport and I know an awful lot of people who think so too. The reaction of 'why is there yet another article about a random event that Scandinavian event that just the elites have been to' is quite common from your average club orienteer and I can identify with that.
I understand why Suse Coon has so much stuff from the elite events - because they're the ones who need to advertise themselves and write stuff about themselves/have someone write it for them. But CompassSport is supposed to be a magazine for your average orienteer, most of whom couldn't care less about what the elites have been up to somewhere halfway across the world. There should be lots more about domestic races, regional events, even local events. Maybe route choices from an interesting colour coded event rather than just from some international races? This is what you find in the equivalent Czech orienteering magazine - at a 5 day event there I attended in the summer, the new number was distributed and people were all keen to get it and read it immediately. Can't see such a rush to read the Compass Sport!!
So definitely have your average orienteer at a domestic event on the front cover rather than some elite at a faraway event! (Though I agree that the picture of Hilary Palmer was crap - looks like she's got that wooden pole or whatever it is sticking out of her head!)
