Similarly, Mr Nikolov managed to run the World Students Sprint without clearaing his SI-card.
He finished with the fastest time, but was DSQ. They could have uplaoded all the controls, but didn't, because the rules say it must be on your SI card. And what you have to do is obey the rules, espeicially important ones.
I ran a scoottish, did the course, got back and it saiid i missed every control, this was SI. hmm, i knnow i went to atleast one. some german or norwegian guy spent the rest of that day recovering my data, donnt know how, but i got the result in the end.
the only time there will be "issues" is either in extreme circutstances, or if someone punnches to fast. thats their own fault. 0.5s at the control, or maybe just run faster in between them.
i think people are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
if its SI, put it in, it bleeps, its on your card, lets go.
if its EMIT, put the brick in, thee light flasehs on V2, or the scree flases on V3. If you put it in properly it is guaranteed to reegister, andnd you will get the back up.
If a unit fails then the organisers will know. if its SI, and you didnt get a flash/beep, thenn pin punch.
emit, use the pin punch on the backup card.

The technology is not available - reading the box will only determine that the competitor visited the control not that they punched correctly.
Which is my point exactly - it proves that you visited the control - which is the important part of the sport, not the ability to shove a SI Card in a hole.
The forthcoming World Cup races will have a number of controls with video feedback to the assembly field. No need to punch at all at these controls then, save yourself a second or so and just get the organiser to view all the video footage to confirm that you were there. The technology exists so make full use of it....

Hope that's a total load of bollocks:)
WOC 2001 in Finland the Lithuanian girl on second last leg was seen clearly to visit the TV control but her punch didn't register. Diana V goes out on last leg & finishes in 4th or 5th position.... only to find team dq'd.... No-one even thought of putting above into action

No more stuffed than if someone forgot to switch the SI unit on
There are already places where observing the competitor can determine whether the course was completed legally - visiting the start kite, taped routes, staying out of out-of-bounds etc. Adding a few more such points isn't a big deal.
One such I would like to see is abolishing the need to punch at the gate into the field at the JK relays. Everyone can see you there, and its perfectly possible to get winning lead on the run in on the basis of faster ecard/slower unit/go-before-the beep/shove-small-child-out-the-way.

But thats exactly what I had in mind - its not exactly hard to spot (and disqualify) people climbing the fence into the finish field. The punch serves no purpose except to randomise the result.

is it really randomised? top elite orienteers will practise punching as fast as they can. and if they've got any sense will have the fastest e-card. and will probably be in the lead.

urm...(puts hand up) I didn't do it on purpose in fact I got a little lost, but a few years ago (at the JIR relays) I took a route that led me through the spectators.

Tell that to Tim Tett. And Dave Peel.

british relays 2002 while you were in oz, tim tett came in on first leg in the lead with speake, eveyone, inc. the controller, saw tim punch the last control but he was too quick and didnt register.
syo were dsq, then reinstated then dsq'd again, after coutless protests and counter-protests.
