Well I was flicking through all the bof bumph that came through the door today (focus & the like) and on the page about the world cup races i saw a flier, and look who it is! Its that man Clelland again, Dave Best's classic photo strikes again (t'was mentioned in this thread but the photo has now sadly disapeared from the University webservers), but it has me wondering whether it was perhaps taken from the nope dvd (I can't remember if this was on it, perhaps someone can tell me?) or whether Dave has contributed it himself.

If so where is Dave?

And is Clelland going to start being given free entries to events due to his increasing fame

If you're talking about that great zoomy picture then clelland will be making a guest appearance at the JK event centre too - it was on the DVD and andy said I could use it - So i hope that was ok - it;s mesmerising

no, i'm glad its getting wider exposure, its a great photo and also a great image of our sport. Things like that are exactly what the dvd was meant for. At least we know that BOF has used some money wisely then, £5 well spent there

well we made the dvd with all the pictures etc on it for use in promotional material, and Dave was happy enough for us to include his picture. I do hope however that he or nope are credited with its use though.

hmmm... i believe this falls under my area of expertise..

bof are treading on massively dangerous ground if indeed they are using images without crediting the photographer or getting prior permission. also i very much doubt that clelland has signed a model release for this image to be used in a publicity context.

so - Dave Best could sue BOF. and would succeed. Also Clelland could sue Dave Best/BOF. And would most likely succeed. Fortunately for BOF we orienteers are nice folks and this probably won't happen. However its not exactly a sensible route for BOF to follow, in fact its downright stupid to not get permission off people before using their material. one day they'll get shafted.

in my opinion Dave should be getting some kind of financial return for the use of his image. or he should be suing BOF.

Well the picture was on the nope CD as a downlaodable image to be used to promote orienteering - I am using a large scale version to brighten up the event centre - all of the rest of the pictures we took ourselves and gave an "artistic treatment' apart from the old Harlequin favourite of Lumpy Lycra running through the trees - I hope Clelland isn't going to come after me with a big chopper

maybe i can clear all this up.

the photo was given to us, and it is my understanding that dave best gave his blessing for us to do what we liked with it.

the images on the dvd are for promotion of the sport by non-professional bodies, as it says in the readme file included on the dvd.

this means that under normal circumstances people like the world cup folk and the jk folk would not be allowed to use the images.

however, both parties contacted me and before i left, and i granted both permission to use a particular shot.

the world cup one was asked for by the wc committee, im not sure how much bof had to do with it.

the agreement was that nopesport be credited for the photo, and if this is not the case then there has been a breach of the agreement.

i have onyl seen a low res copy of the poster/flyer, and i didnt think to check whether there was a credit or not, so i dont know if there is a problem or not

no matter how petty it may be, i think that 'crediting' information/material is really important. we've all done it in Uni essays - if we didn't it'd be plagiarism. if it was my photo being used i'd be hassling and hassling until i got that credit.

if anything its just a matter of respect.

No one asked me if they could use the photo of me but I really don't care, it's well cool. I do wish I could be at the JK to soak up some more of the fame
When I originally saw that it was being used on the Edinburgh uni sports pack back in late summer 2003 I practically wet myself laughing, the thought of me being the pin up of British orienteering.

Could anyone help me get that back as my atavar. I originally took it off and replaced it with a photo of me kicking Mark Saunders' ass at the beer shot challenge in Aboyne a couple of years ago, but it was too small and poo. When I went back to reinstall the previous image it said the file size was too large (it was an impressively big atavar), even though it was exactly the same photo.

Incidentially, for all you edinburgh kids who can remember, I was walking through the middle of Sydney the other day when I saw a group of people running towards me all with T-shirts with "Michael Page" on the front, it brought a smile to my face.

Ah michael page, absolute legend from emails of days gone by. Steve, if you can get your hands on a Michael Page t-shirt it'd be a great momento!
