Hi everybody,
Hope you're all having fun doing whatever you are doing.
Here's just a brief account of some of the things I've been up to lately.
I've been in Oz for two months now, Perth was nice fairly quiet city. Didn't manage to find work there, well If I'm honest I probably could have done if I put the effort in. I did a short stint at apple thinning in a small town called donnybrook 3 hours south of Perth. Wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting and the pay farily reasonable for fruit picking but boring as hell. There was a nice crowd of people down there, but I couldn't get my head around the Australians there. I shared a room with a 38 year old who had been there for the last 4 years, he was literally a career fruit picker! Oh, and there was a fight in which a welsh guy got stabbed in the back
I was back to Perth for Christmas and new year spending far to much money going out and lots of time on the beach. I was starting to stress a bit about my lack of income until I got a job 800km up the coast in a place called Denham, the most westerly"town" in Australia.
There are only around 1000 people living here but the next nearest place Carnarvon is 350 km, 150 back to the main road then 200 north. As A geordie I work with said we aren't in the middle of nowhere, we're on the edge of nowhere. The area itself is known as shark bay, a world heritage area. From those who care from where I am you can see Dirk Hartog island, named after the Dutch explorer who landed there in 1616, the first person to land on Australian soil. I was over the other side of the penninsula (sweating in the 40 degree heat) the other day at monkey mia which is famous for the dolphins that come in every day to get fed. You're not actually allowed to directly approach them so everybody tries to position themselves so they come to you i.e. you get in there way, which is a bit of a circus. I waded out and picked my spot and sure enough after a couple of minutes the pair that were there swam right around me while chasing a fish.
There are two bars in town just a couple of hundred metres apart but they could just as well be 2000km apart for the difference between them. For my first week I worked in the old pub where the locals drink, there are friendly enough if rather rough. Half of them have hair styles and clothes that haven't been in fashion for at least 10 years, a lot of the others have styles that have never been in fashion, yes we're talking real rednecks. Now I've been moved up to the "resort" hotel - which is owned by the same guy - where all the tourists go, which I prefer, and I get to work with other backpackers.
It would be good to here how things are going back home and if anyone wants a postcard let me know your address.
Here from you soon
Steve
Aye, I had to get one of the "lucky" few to forward this to me, obviously we're not good enough (looking? female?) to get sent anything.

Yes, thanks a lot Brooner.
I would have kept you guys informed myself with some different info. Actually did a couple of park races in Perth, pretty good they were too, if rather hot.
Also I just got offered a place on a masters at Edinburgh starting in Autumn, but at the mo it's probably my second choice after Glasgow.
