but why do they make so much noise - it can't be mechanical so I guess it must be part of the process. I was so tensed up i started to twitch and as the nurse had said you must keep still i actually went into labour ward breathing mode to try and relax. a full body scan must be very scary indeed:shock:
Oh and by the way , token octaroon or not, do you play a musical instrument?

Its not an essential part of the process, its just that a high frequency magnetic coil vibrates like mad when run at the required power. People are looking at enclosing the coil in a vacuum to quieten it down - which would cost more...
Oh and by the way, do you play a musical instrument?
No, why?

If the coil vibrates so much is there not a danger of it damaging the apparatus itself and surely the vibration could affect the images?
For my JK banter evening of course, I want some adult stalwarts to balance up the junior enthusiasm - you struck me as a likely candidate - feel free to nominate anyone else of your acquaintance who might be able to provide some background music

Fantastic question...
No, the images aren't affected by the vibration because its the NUCLEAR magnetic resonance which is imaged (you are the nuclear object, and you aren't moving), not the coil magnetic field. Returning vaguely to the original thread - I'm sure this would have been more obvious if the N-word hadn't been PCed away.
But then, if they knew you were a nuclear object, they probably wouldn't let you in the hospital.

Mrs H ! we'll have none of that
do you mean MRI ?
or like Graeme says NMR Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
the nuclear refers to the nuclei in the atoms of your body. they are made to resonate by the huge monster magnetic coil they put you in. the resonating allows the image to be made.
So unless you are made of something other than atoms you can be as stupid as you like - it will still work

If you could run forever ......
