On the subject of dibbers:

BOF has a set of 100 dibbers specifically bought to support development events like the YBT: they used to be lent to events on the proviso that no charge was made for their use. There has also been money in the past to support SI Card hire - so I suspect a talk with Hilary Palmer etc. will see help in ensuring sufficient dibbers on the day.

Are these the BSOA ones if so I believe Pauline Olivant has them or will know where they are

UNFORTUNATELY there is only an extra qualifying place when ALL the qualifiers also finished in the top 5 of the previous year's final. Thus AIRE and DEE qualify, but as only AIRE finished in the top five there is no extra qualifying place. Tough on MDOC and SROC, but that's the rules.

The rules that are available from the BOF site (here) seem to suggest that the post in the juniors forum is correct. I have quoted the relevant bit below (and put into bold the most important bits). As phrased it means that MDOC and SROC do go through.

(a) For the purposes of this rule a 'complete team' is a participating club which has started (even if not finished) at least 9 eligible runners (as defined in rule 7). Whilst clubs with incomplete teams can qualify, they do not count for deciding how many clubs qualify from that round.
(b) From each qualifying match the first placed club(s) will qualify if there are less than 5 complete teams; first and second placed clubs will qualify if there are 5-7 complete teams; first, second and third placed clubs will qualify if there are over 7 complete teams.
(c) In matches with at least 3 complete teams, for every qualifying team which finished in the top 5 in the final in the previous year, an extra qualifying place will be provided. (Extra places are not be provided if the 'top 5' team does not qualify.)

As there were 5 complete teams there are two places in the final.
Because AIRE were in the top five last time and qualified from this round an extra qualifying place is provided.
Thus three places (with MDOC and SROC not being split, since there is no countback in qualifiers).

Hmmmm. I think you need to check your facts again. The rules HAVE stayed the same from one year to the next. The last changes were made in January 2003, and were an alteration required by the changes to junior badge classes. The rule that you are referring to was actually introduced 3 years ago.

I've just read on the banter forum that I shocked some juniors with my use of bad language yesterday - i'm very sorry i was in a very bad mood yesterday and gross annoyed me by bringing something into the debate which was not strictly relevant.

I'd just like to point out that no-one has addressed hocolite's original question on who is elligible to run what - what constitutes a gold standard and whose got one (I'm afraid I don't know what my children have due to the JW/M thing).

Just for the recond I discussed the start arrangements with Mr H. last night and we decided it would be better for the children if he went to work and i drove them up without attempting to run - that way we can concentrate on the junior competition (perhaps he'll avail himself of the internet link to follow the results).

I totally agree, but those are the rules. Not to comply with the rules puts your team at a disadvantage, and in the final that would be disasterous. When everyone was asked for their views after the 2001 final, WCH proposed that competitors should only be able to run down 1 course, i.e. M/W14 without Gold standard could run orange.

Andy Kelly's YBT structure had logic (although I prefer our proposal), but it will fall apart without keeping the JM/W Gold standards current. We still have a copy of the list produced last November, which WCH will use as the base for the final, but we could do with all clubs voluntarily updating their standards if no revised list is forthcoming. WCH already have, which is why Adam Bushnell ran Green.
Perhaps we could make that a condition of accepting club's entries, in the spirit of fairness to all?!!!

I agree Mark - that's why Dan also ran green and Heather light green - to be on the safe side - but how are we to know - i see Mikey ran light green having got an M16 championship standard at 0007 - should he or shouldn't he - who can tell us?

Someone who has read the rules...

On course eligbility the rules state: Light Green: any M/W14-, plus any M/W16+ who has not achieved Level 5 Gold badge

I take that to mean it was fine (since a M16 course is level 4) - unless said person got gold standard running JM5S/M/L somewhere else.


Seems like this is a problem that should be looked at in conjunction with the ranking lists. These are currently produced for the seniors, so the event organisers must be submitting the necessary data to this scheme. A bit of further work should surely allow for all the gold standard juniors at the relevant levels to also be pulled out of the results.[/i]
