We could blame COVID for the lack of water stations but closer to the truth would be that even in the populous SE it's increasingly difficult to get volunteers. As a result some of the things that we would like to see, and used to see all of the time, are getting dropped to concentrate on the essentials.

Hopefully the no drinks message is clear in the final details thus allowing competitors to make their own provision.

We of course anticipated a cold and wet March weekend which is why the vehicle tracking is being delivered and laid tomorrow in blazing sunshine.

Safety and Risk in the Final Details refers to possible need for waterproof jackets with head covering and what to do in the event of severe electrical storms.....

Weather forecast is for 17 degrees and full sunshine all day.

Obvious risk is dehydration/sun stroke, especially for the 17km, 815m climb on M21E.

Maybe a case of "Must carry water"?

Competitors should bring their own drinks and ensure adequate hydration pre and post event

I'd suggest if you expect to be running for 90 mins plus you should consider carrying your own water.

I’ve run an elite race where they decided at the last minute it was looking like it was going to be warm and the organiser left a load of bottles of water at one of the far end controls with a note in the start lane that if you wanted water to help yourself. It worked well and was much appreciated.

I’m looking forward to a race without horizontal sleet. There have been all too many wet weekends recently.

The organisers for Saturday are working on water out on the courses(but they are currently NOT in a position to confirm anything). It is a matter of, potentially, the redeployment of volunteer resources in order to ensure that water is available to all AND that litter is eliminated before local residents see it and complain (not to us but to the landowners). We too prefer a nice sunny late March for setting out courses and the arena, but as NeilC has said the TrakMat is being fitted tomorrow!!

After 24 hours of trying to find suitable places for in course water points and trying to redeploy the limited available volunteers the organisers have concluded that it will NOT be possible to supply water on the courses.

As has been said earlier: take with you what you need and make sure you are sufficiently hydrated before you
Start. Some competitors on the longer courses will probably be out for in excess of 2 hours.

Thank you for your efforts to look into this. If guaranteed water stations cant be provided it is probably best not to adopt a 'half way house' solution of making some water available.
Competitors need certainty that there will be or wont be water. Water stations running out of supply has caused problems in past events with late starters feeling disadvantaged.
Hopefully everyone will come prepared for potentially a very long race in unseasonal heat. Will it be possible to leave empty water bottles at the Starts?

Water on Courses

In light of the forecast for unseasonably warm weather over the weekend we have taken the decision to provide water on the longer courses for the Long Championships on Saturday.
Courses 1 - 6 and 8 - 14 cross a minor road twice roughly 1/3 rd and 2/3rd through each course. Crossing points are marked on competitors maps and there will be water points at some of these (at others it would be unsafe). Which ones will only be shown by a “W" on blank maps in the start lanes, not on competitors maps – the maps were already printed before we made this decision.

Due to manpower constraints at this late stage these water points will be self-service. You will need to take a plastic cup and fill it with water yourself. After drinking you should drop your cup into the black rubbish bag provided, or next to it. On no account should you take the cup with you and drop it away from the water point – we want to be welcomed back for events in the future and litter in the fields/forest will jeopardise our chances of that. If you would prefer not to have to stop to pour your own water, you may wish to carry a camelback.

Now we know why it’s called the British Long champs

It was type 2 fun at times, but thanks to everyone involved. I’m glad I did it.

Anyone who was there able to comment on why 9 of the 50 starters on M21E mispunched on the same control (#21)?

#21 was on an earthwall inside corner. The obvious direction of approach was from the north-west, following a distinct vegetation boundary along a spur:

Before reaching #21, you first came across a very visible control that was used on several other courses, including M18E/M20E/M35L. This control was on the tip of the dark green, although I am not sure what the exact control description was:

Although not shown on the map, the NW-SE earthwall in fact extended down the ridge along the vegetation boundary. Some competitors, coming across a control on the correct line and on the expected side of an earthwall, punched it without checking the code.

From looking at the printed map, I'd guess that the two controls were between 60 and 70m apart, so a little over the minimum 60m separation for controls on similar features.
