Picture the scene.
Finish line. Park-O light green. 3.5 km of which 1km was a very complicated woodland full of pits and with 5 times more paths than shown on the map.
In I come from a gloriously slow round - my slowest ever, in fact I would have been quicker walking - but it is only four weeks since I had an operation and my first outing so I am full of the joys of spring, glad to be alive and awfully glad that I managed to finish.
Superfit orienteer lounging by finish punctures the mood - "we were about to send the search parties" - thanks mate!
What comments - good or bad - from finish lines stick in the memory? I am sure there are some gems.

My favourite remains those classic words uttered by the inimitable Pakit Hyman on completion of the WOC Classic selection race at Dalmacallen 1991. Words still oft quoted to this day, following an excessive outing in the woods or the hills.
You probably had to be there, but hey,
Everyone was out for ages.
Pakit was last home after a late start slot.
He dips the line, as is his wont and stagger/stumbles on to the forest road, comes to a halt hands on knees. eventually someone saunters over and pats him on the back and says
"Long ?"
Pakit replies, in the tiredest, most spaced out voice you can imagine
" Long....Long..., Oh yes, verry long "
and promptly keels over.

If you could run forever ......

British Schools up at Cragside in the north east a few years back, I come in after what I thought was quite a good run (for me) only to have our PE teacher (Dave Troman) shout to me "You didn't have to remap the f**king area while you were at it..."
...before the invention of doors, the outdoors was just called 'home'...

During a local sunday morning mass start race I once had the pleasure of arriving at the finish line in the middle of a thunderstorm to notice that there was no final control.
I frantically ran around all the empty cars at the finish area screaming "theres no control."
the planner then hopped out of his car half asleep, then banged his head of the car boot whilst frantically searching for a control. Second and third place had now arrived and my aprox 30sec lead disappeared as the three of us tried to use the control first.
