All deltas subside as the weight of the sediment slowly depresses the crust. The sediment from the rivers would of course also build up the delta but, once an area is urbanised, people wash the sediment away and build walls to stop the rivers flooding. Rising sea levels and a bit of very long term subduction following the Alpine Orogeny don't help matters. It's nice to get some geology in here... and I'm looking forward to orientating the map using the Caledonian NE/SW strike of the rocks on Haverthwaite this weekend.

No no... it's just that the crags are so reliably aligned NE/SW that you can use them to orientate the map... the most useful geological anomaly is of course around Market Weighton where the low gravity means you can run faster and jump higher.
(Venice will have higher than average gravity I guess (?), to get back to the topic).
