Starts tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. Anyone else?
Good to see there will be some live tracking. Marge has been chosen to carry one which would have been very amusing for me. Unfortunately she won't be there on day 1 as she's still at the OO Cup.
Here's hoping for some decent (dry) weather...

Has anyone got any tips on how to get the live streaming to work? I get about 3 seconds of video before it buffers. Have tried laptop and phone, and on the latter both the Vimeo app and via Chrome; but same result in all cases. I always seem to struggle with anything on Vimeo. Looks like a great broadcast, but for me is currently unwatchable

Exactly the same for us I'm afraid - I'm assuming it's to do with the actual streaming and not our broadband. Unless you need superfast fibre or something, which we haven't got. Live tracking a bit hit and miss in the terrain of course, but good to watch all the same.

Yes, unfortunately the problem with the live streaming was at our end in the assembly field. Our satellite broadband connection had a few problems. Hopefully we will get things sorted for tomorrow

Watch the replay now - it seems to work fine on my laptop.

Re: Scottish 6 Days
What's the correct etiquette when there is live streaming of gps tracking available in the assembly area before you go for your run?
Is it ok to watch if you're doing a different course or shouldn't you be watching at all? I admit to sneaking a look at M55 but others thought that I probably shouldn't (I was running M50).
If competitors shouldn't be watching then who is the coverage aimed at?

I think I'd tend to agree with "others" on this one. Main reasons...
1. There's often a fair degree of commonality between courses of roughly similar length - so less of an issue if you were just looking at M21E, perhaps - and...
2. Even if the courses differ quite a lot, just knowing the location of the start can be helpful *
If competitors shouldn't be watching then who is the coverage aimed at?
Those who have finished their run?
* As an aside, I've been to a few events recently where the start and finish have been marked on the start lane maps, something I think is a good idea and I hope becomes more widespread.

Re: Scottish 6 Days
So people on the 55 classes could actually see their course and how the others were doing it before their run if they had a mind to! I wonder how many did?
Stuck at home in the pouring rain I thoroughly enjoyed the live streaming. It was fascinating to see some people having a good run actually give up after fluffing one control while others just doggedly persevere even after taking half an hour wondering around in the wrong place.
I wonder which of them finished the event having enjoyed it the most?

If you look at the streaming, you're trading some of the enjoyment of the orienteering challenge for a better result.
For most of us mid packers, nobody else cares how we do, so its just cheating yourself. In your case, since you might spoil someone else's day by winning, you probably should agree with your rivals what the etiquette is.

Livestream working better today and seems to be better coverage for tracking, but results not working at all...
An interesting innovation, not sure who the intended audience is (other than those of us who couldn't make it for one reason or another) or whether there will be any way of working out who actually watched?

We had to cancel our entries so have enjoyed watching so far - playing 'spot the club shirt' etc etc. Adds an extra dimension on top of checking results and seeing photos after the event and you feel a little less divorced from the action and atmosphere. Thumbs up from us in spite of there being a few broadcasting problems - I'm sure all concerned are working hard to keep it going.

Re: Scottish 6 Days
This is surely a no-brainer. Orienteering is built around trust, in that we trust embargoes to be avoided, uncrossables to not be crossed, full-blown following to be loathed, and to not look at race maps or GPS traces (and in a perfect world even knowing finish times) before start times or finishing respectively. At the international level, this fairplay often even extends to doping with limited testing imposed.
Even if you're not fussed about your result since you're a 'mid-pack runner', others finishing around you may still want to be competitive. Being on another course doesn't cut it either, with new (sometimes brand new) maps, and as ricardito says: start, control, and leg locations.
(Makes me nervous to think about the validity of any of your previous successes Homer )
The livestream is for those who haven't been able to make it (like me ) and competitors who want to see their routes after on a mostly complete course in terms of available GPS traces, or those who may not own a GPS watch or know how to upload and edit routes on RG. Great to see and an even better idea to vary the courses being focussed on!

Re: Scottish 6 Days
OK so today the tracking was covering M18L (same course as M50L). I didn't take a sneak preview. Honest.
But why lead us into temptation? It would be easy to delay the upload of tracking until after the last start. I can understand the need for live tracking in a relay (such as Jukola) where there is head-to-head racing with the winner being first across the line. A big screen can make for an exciting spectator experience, but that's not what we're talking about here.
I apologise for any perceived advantage I may have gained by looking at the tracking yesterday. I will happily make myself non-competitive, so long as everyone who went straight across the river (through the thick red line) towards the end of today's course does the same

Found it disconcerting that a Dad taking his youngster up to do the M10 spent a lot of time studying the map. Thought the idea was for the child to talk about his course. Dad won his course!
