Jess DNS. Congrats to Hollie on her 16th place. Cat (57th) and Megan (58th) 3 secs apart - well done Megan. Jo 67th. Tessa 93rd.
If I heard right the Fin Marika Teini (5th) may not run tomorrow because of particles in the air.

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
Having skipped the Sprint Final, Hollie has had a great run today. 16th place, but the times are closely packed at the top.

Leg it round the road on the long leg again . Especially for the women, bit more balanced for the men. You might have thought the planner would have paid attention to Miranova/Gemperle tactics at WOC2014/2016.

However, a replay of the GPS tracking suggests there was very little in it. And it looks to me as if 8 out of the top 10 women finishers actually took the straight option.

Tomorrow's race is a chasing start Long race!
Normal start interval for a Long race would be 4 minutes. Tomorrow there are 13 Women and 24 Men all starting within 4 minutes of the Leaders. Could be interesting...

... and yet they let the Norwegian (who started 15th) win!
Interesting course. I'm fairly sure the planner didn't want Kyburz and Regborn running across that cultivated field.
The butterfly loops at the South end of the map split the groups up not at all.

Are the results meant to be based on how how fast the went or where they finished? How do they do the world ranking points? (OK, so in this case the fastest times won, but still...)

I haven't seen the GPS so don't know which field you mean, but the organisers were quite clear that everything was fair game unless covered with the OOB symbol. Cultivated fields and olive green aren't uncrossable on forest maps according to IOF rules.
They were also quite clear that the results are based on finishing order - there's no World Cup Long race, but there is a World Cup Chasing Start race.
Brilliant fun and a great format I thought!

Yes, they were not organised like a cycling team, with Runesson still taking his turn at the front of the chasing group when it was two Swedes ahead.

This bit. It seemed strange that the field was OOB to the East of the ditch, but not the West. Nothing wrong with what Regborn and Kyburz did (except that it wasn't a good route - they lost the lead to Svensk and Lind on the long leg to 16).

Also great fun to watch!

Olive green is, however, uncrossable ("shall not be entered") in the shiny new ISOM2017 - for the next couple of years WRE organisers will be wise to make it clear which map spec they're using, as the bulletins for this World Cup round did.

So athlete's elapsed time.
Alan, Jonny, Peter Bray all have new PBs for WR points (forest).
[edit] and Peter Hodkinson would also have a new PB too, had he not run so well the day before.
Chris and Ralph might have also done well had they been able to start/finish. Tough luck for them.

Re: World Cup 1 - Finland
I didn't know about this at the time. However to me the format seems fine for a fun event, but for a World Cup
I really don't get the idea that a conventional time trial is unexciting particularly with good use of tracking. The excitement is sustained rather than watching a pack punning together and a sprint finish.
I guess the IOF want the winner to be the best sprinter irrespective of navigation ability.
Housewife is clearly in my camp, but what do the elite really think. I would imagine those with a real turn of speed like it and the old fashioned tough fit and brilliant navigators don't.
