What a lot of silliness. So five races in NZ costs about 65quid plus some buses more than the equivalent in Estonia. Attribute the difference to the WMG if you will but at the end of the day you get to race in NZ sand-dunes rather than Estonian bog and NZ is a more expensive country anyway.
And of course entry fees are such a tiny part of the total cost of the trip, it would be a tad odd to let that be the factor that dissuades someone coming from the UK anyway.
Want some middle distance orienteering? Do the Oceania Champs over Easter too. Or stay at home and do another JK in the South East. That'll be nice
Oh well, your loss.

Do normal orienteering compasses work over there? I've read that (because of the "dip" angle) compasses are balanced differently for the northern and southern hemispheres.

Re: WMOC 2017 New Zealand
The IOF General Assembly today decided that a Middle race should be added to the WMOC programme, starting from 2018 in Denmark.
The IOF Foot-O Commission has now been tasked with working out the detail ...
Surely the only way is to have a qualifier and a final for each distance? So 6 races in total instead of 5. Seeding does not sound practical.

When you say "normal" are you being Nothern Hemispherist ?
It is correct that compasses are balanced differently for use in different latitudes.

Hold a WMOC with qualifier then final for each of Sprint, Middle, Long?
Interesting idea, maybe IOF could try it for WOC too...
Why did I do that...

You're better off with Southern hemisphere compasses - avoids problems of sticking needles.

The first time I took a group downunder I mentioned Southern Hemisphere compasses on the plane and recommended them. Most people laughed and one even accused me of making them up and refused to believe there was any such thing. After race 1, and some disastrous bearings caused by sticking needles, 9 people went out and bought the article in question.

Re Southern Hemisphere compasses, I think you may need different versions for each of S America, S Africa and Australia/New Zealand ?

Re: WMOC 2017 New Zealand
I've recently been made aware of the decision that no public races will be staged alongside WMOC 2017, and this could have unfortunate consequences for attendance.
See the Attackpoint thread on this too.

Does anyone know what Tom Hollowell (newish IOF CEO) thinks about tying WMOC to WMG? He seems like quite a business-minded, straightforward sort of chap?

The New Zealand Federation asked about the proposed continued connection between the WMOC and the World Masters Games (WMG) at the recent IOF General Assembly.
The reply was
So, watch this space!
The reply was
the International Masters Games Association was in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding use of Olympics legacy facilities for WMG. The IOF wished therefore to await and review the outcome of the discussions prior to any further decision about the connection between WMOC and WMG.
