Interesting comment on this in the middle of a response by Mike H in curent Focus in response to a long letter by a concerned LOC member.

Re: JWOC/EYOC selections
Main reason for not letting athletes go to JEC seems to be "athlete burnout". Correct me if I'm wrong but they either get the chance to go to EYOC OR JWOC which are in June/July and then they're allowed on one summer tour (two if they can lie and cheat their way). Then there's at least 5 weeks to JEC in October and then there's nothing on the junior calendar until the domestic season starts again the next Spring.
1. If you were lucky enough to get to EYOC or JWOC and performed on the day I daresay you'd want to go to JEC and run in your age class and carry on that upward trend.
2. If you went to EYOC or JWOC and failed to perform on the day then surely JEC is an opportunity to put things right before the season's end.
3. If you failed to get to EYOC/JWOC but are keen, working hard and aspiring then I can see no reason why not to offer a JEC experience to begin those upward steps.
Yes, I'm not involved in the current programme and not fully averse to staff thinking. You may have what you think are perfectly valid views as to why opportunities for juniors (that are already limited) should be limited further. In my view most sports work on a pyramidal development basis - providing lots of experiences and opportunities for the young enables a handful to come through. Restrict the opportunities and the handful shrinks to nothing.
Oh, whilst I'm writing, despite what Jackie et al might think the best performance at JWOC so far by a Brit wasn't achieved this year.

This is Focus you're talking about - they aren't going to let facts get in the way of PR bullshit

Re: JWOC/EYOC selections
I've said it before and I'll say it again - British orienteering hasn't won a mens individual medal in the forest in a World champs, World cup, or European Champs for 10 years. The last time they won a relay medal in any event was 8 years ago, and only once in the last 11 years has a girl won a medal in any major international race forest or council estate. How does British orienteering get away with it? The development/elite set up has been a totally messed up for years, any idiot can see that, just look at the statistics!

You mean the stats that show the last WOC medal being won in 2013?
So no WOC medals since 2013.
N.b. UK Sport funding for the performance programme was withdrawn in... 2013.

So which of Heather Munro's WOC bronze (less than 11 years ago), Cat's World Cup Final gold or European bronze are you counting? I'm assuming that Lucy Butt's EYOC bronze and Helen Bridle's WUOC silver aren't "major" enough for you....

You can try and support your buddies at BOF but facts are facts. BOF has mightily failed to develop a huge crop of talented athletes in to medal winners at WOC. Its just mad putting sometime in charge of athletes in a highly technical sport that has no idea about the sport..........its like putting a skateboarder in charge of training the national figure skating squad any idiot can see its just not gonna work! BOF should sack half their staff, charge every member any extra 10 pounds, and sign Thierry to coach the national junior/ development team for the next 5-10 years.

full respect to EYOC and WUOC medal winners but I was only referring to WOC, World Cup and Euro champs as major races

Yes, I did read that - but WOC isn't just about Forest O...

Well, some of the proposed £10 increase in membership fee could certainly go to better fund our performance programme. It's definitely underfunded at the moment, but it's the best that can be done with limited funds. Should be a different story come 2017...if the AGM motion passes.

Re: JWOC/EYOC selections
daffy, is that the motion proposed by the directors, which ignores the members resolution passed at the 2012 AGM that the subscriptions were not too exceed 25% of the funding in the future. A binding instruction on the directors on future funding proposals? If you do not understand this, I suggest you read the wording of the 2012 AGM and the resolutions passed by the members.
It is deeply worrying that this has escaped the notice of the directors who are meant to managing BOF on behalf of the members.

daffdy/greywolf > Britain won 26 WOC, European and World Cup medals between 1995-2006. In the last 10 years since 2006 Britain has won 4 medals, 2 of which weren't in the forest, despite that up until 2003 WOC was only every other year!! Doesn't anybody care that BOF has massively failed its up and coming juniors/young seniors for the last 10 years.

No... seems not

Never used to be a surprise when GBR got a medal.....well it was actually as one Ms Monro never got a medal for her first 'medal' & she was presented later... in Japan if I remember right

Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)
