Putting aside all the debate on pre-entries, what a great event tonight. Good facilities and setup and really well planned courses on a challenging area. Well done everyone involved in the organisation.
Also nice to see GG and Housewife making the trek down from Scotland to support our National Championships.

Agree with all that,a great area for a night champs - but for us oldies really spoilt by the map.it was impossible to see the countours, ditches and undergrowth screens at night, with the paths overpowering everything. There was just too much detail for 10000 at night. The map should have been at 7500, which would have greatly improved the event.

Or the map should have been more generalised and shown less detail.
(But this debate has been had before).

I don't think a more generalised map would have helped. The detail was on the ground. Generalising the map would have exacerbated the problem.

I agree with Buzz.
Other than the pre-entry issue, a very well organised and planned event. I also agree with Ian that a 1:7,500 would be appreciated for us oldies. I managed just thanks to the offset litho printing and the fact it was dry. Suspect i'd have been stuffed it had rained.
Thanks LEI for a great night out.

Re: British NIght Championships 2016 (2)
Great event and I enjoyed the night out in the woods as I always do.
However, I really struggled with the amount of 'information' crammed onto the map. My aged eyes found the contours unreadable underneath the layers of vague vegetation and bramble screen. Consequently I took things really slowly and carefully ticked off paths and whatever features I was sure about.
And then disaster as I negotiated the complex paths south of 10 on course 6. I was fairly sure where I was (but not 100% confident) and the map showed my path terminating and then a short trek through white to pick up another path, but what I found on the ground was an enormous track junction. I assumed that must have diverted from my route and deviated to one of the other large track junctions mapped but I couldn't make anything fit and 20mins later I decided I was wholly lost, couldn't orienteer, and bailed out on the safety bearing.
Talking to people afterward it seems I was in exactly the right place but the mapper seems to have decided not to map the path junction perhaps because it was too complex (at 1:10k ?). If this is true then I feel rather peeved because what was shown on the map was 'nothing' which was the exact opposite of what was on the ground! If it had been a complex rock formation would the mapper have decided not to map it?
Thoughts?

I too had difficulty reading the 1:10,000 map, particularly the contours. The whole experience felt like running on a training map with the contours removed. Normally when I night orienteer, the magnifying lense on my compass is sufficient to see all the detail when required but it was completely adequate last night. Judging by the number of retirees and long times posted, it looks as though quite a few competitors struggled and not only those with old eyes. A pity, as it was a well organised event and a lot of effort had obviously gone into the course planning.

Exactly the conclusion we came during PRA.
That said, I think the planner did a great job in setting challenging courses and the event ran very smoothly - well worth the trip. Thanks to all involved in putting on a most enjoyable event.
