Can anyone help, please?
Does Condes allow course numbering to start with a number other than 1? If so, how, as I can't find it!

Re: Condes query
Do you mean the numbers of the courses, or the numbers of the controls within a course ?
If the latter, are you thinking of map excchange ? There is a facility for this, but can't remember the details without checking. A low-tech way is to place the first n controls off the print area and cut / blank out the red line to the first one on the map.

Re: Condes query
The number of the controls. As you guessed, I'm trying to do a second half of a course. I'm wanting to do it as a separate course because, as far as I can tell, Condes won't put or allow you to put the distances of the different parts into the control descriptions, only allowing the overall distance to go in. Thanks for the low-tech solution, but that I don't think will allow me to sort out the problem. Thank you anyway.

Possibly.....
Export the course maps to OCAD and then edit them in OCAD as you please. Normally you can set up first and second maps for a course easily from one master one by deleting as you wish.

Why not e-mail Finn directly - he is usually very prompt and helpful in responding to questions and suggestions.

Thanks for the idea. I've not found it as straightforward as had hope doing this, but may try again.

Yes - will do. Just that usually get a quicker answer to this sort of problem by asking here.

Re: Condes query
Not at all helpful to AWK, but ideally we should persuade IOF to update the control description rules to allow for the fact that courses are sometimes split. Then all the course planning software would implement the same layout. As far as I can tell the latest rules are 2004 and only specify that a control description header should include the course length.

I would have thought that would be the longest possible way to get a change... given how slowly IOF works.

Perhaps another low tech solution.
Use Condes to calculate the course lengths for you but then switch off using the calculated length and just type in the actual figures you want to appear.

I've had to do that for most of the longer courses, even those with just one part! As there are a number of uncrossable walls, the distance is calculated via the crossing points that give the shortest distance, but the automatic calculation is done along the red line (which isn't always kinked to the crossing points as there is more often than not a choice, so the line stays straight, just broken for the uncrossable wall).
However, there is only space for one distance per course, and I want one for each part!

use the Select route choice line for each of the legs involving wall crossings then select that option in the course menu.
You can also set height climb on each leg so they are automatically calculated too.
These are both Condes 9 features. Of course neither of these features help with awk's original issue.
I'd re-iterate Big Jon's suggestion of speaking to Finn about it. Such an option would I suspect be a useful one.
Having said that I once did a Harvester on short night leg for MDOC. I picked up my map, 4.4 km, perfect, off I trotted. I didn't see anyone until 1/2 way round when I spotted my SYO rival goign in the opposite direction. 2 controls to go, path run, look ahead. Hmm no finish circle, maybe there is a map exchange for a final 1km loop ... nope ANOTHER 4.4 km AND still no finish circle ... oops I'm on the Long night leg (using a headtorch Mark Seddon had already done a leg in). It turns out the organisers had accidently knocked a few kites of the trees and mistakenly put ours back on in the wrong order. They held up their hands to this and refunded our entries so I think that was a nice touch. Of course the problem might not have happened had the CD said the whole course length rather than just the bit for my 1st map.
Footnote to that story is that when I finished I had about 5 hours to be driven by Mark to Coniston (from the NE) for my early start in the OS Trial ... let's say I didn't have my best run.

Re: Condes query
The solution is to create 2 copies of the course with manually entered course lengths.
Then print Part 1 of the first course and Part 2 of the 2nd.
I often do this on double sided so that the title on the map says
"COURSE A" on the front and
"COURSE A - PART 2" in big bold letters on the back so runners know which side to look at when they pick their map up.
