The OS has just released a new useful set of data called OS Open Map Local
It is nationwide, free and if you cannot get other OS data free it might help your mapping project. Positionally it is accurate but it needs work. I am sure Oli can incorporate it into OpenOrienteeringMap

He tweeted about it yesterday. Vastly more accurate than previous open data

I can - I've had a look at the building bit of the data - but it's quite a lot of work so I would need to first be convinced of the benefits of including it for Street-O maps. Currently I use OSM which has (I think) pretty good coverage of public/private roads, waterways and paths in most areas, but is missing a lot of buildings. OS Open Map Local has good (better?) coverage of public roads, buildings, waterways, but no paths or tracks. Are buildings useful for people on Street-O maps?
Stop talking, start running.

Not if they are at the expense of small paths - these really make an area.
We use OOM a lot for mid week club nights, there are quite a few missing paths on many of our areas but if a planner spots one of these they are easily added using Purple Pen/OCAD.

Re: New useful free data
Building are definitely useful. I can't see why they would come at the expense of small paths. The only thing which is a problem is overmapping internal fences in OOB areas which can make it hard to pick up the actual small paths. Here's an example where it doesn't really matter, because there aren't many cut throughs and those which do exist are emphasized with thick black fences.

Small cut-throughs are often hard to distinguish from private paths to peoples' back gardens. Having the buildings mapped can really help to avoid unwitting trespass.

Re: New useful free data
If the data are being used as a template for a fully surveyed ISSOM map then yes the buildings are very useful.
If they are being used to create an OOM for a low key training event then I'd prefer to have paths not buildings.
So to Ollie's specific question about whether to have more buildings/less paths on OOM, no is my answer.
P.S. We have now run several events using the OOM postbox add-on - great facility.

Re: New useful free data
I'm a bit confused about the "missing paths" comment. It does seem that in places the new data maps underpasses as buildings, but in most areas OOMap is better with more detail. See attached examples.

Re: New useful free data
OOMap currently uses the OSM data which has paths mapped well. If he switches to the OS data you would get buildings but it doesn't have paths. Assuming it's an issue of using one or other but not mixing both.

Why wouldn't you add it to OSM, whence it will get picked up by OOM the following day?

Because for a typical Tuesday night club night I'll manage to find a few hours at the weekend to plan the course, draw up the map and e-mail it off to the person who prints them. With 30 or so of these to do each year I'd much rather get each one done and dusted in a single session each week.
You are right though I should be feeding back info to OSM, just another item on the to-do list though.
