At a couple of overseas events, most recently POM, I've been pleased to receive splits like this (the style, rather than the actual numbers...).
I know that various things are customisable in the splits printouts - does any of you download gurus feel the urge to show deficits and leg positions?
With the POM set-up, any leading splits were identified in bold italic, which was a nice idea -- particularly for early starters.

Re: Splits Printouts
At the croatia multi day last year, splits were printed on a sticky label type roll, so when you got your splits off the printer you peeled the back off the label and could stick your splits to the map, rather than them getting lost on the way to the car, or having to wait until you got home to staple them to your map. A much better way of printing splits, bit of googling should find a supplier to fit a printer.

CLOK have a sticky-splits printer that often gets used - a great idea.
In Tallinn a few years back your splits print-out told you your pace (min/km) for each leg. Most entertaining in a sprint where you may have 2 controls close geographically but not by the routes available.

At the public races at WOC in Finland you didn't get any splits and no results shown on the day

I've been saying for years now we shouldn't be printing out splits, it's just a waste of paper/power/effort. There should be a visual confirmation of time (or mp/dnf or whatever) and then screens with results away from download.
I don't agree that we should be putting more info into splits. Positions are a big no for me because they change, even current place overall I'm not so sure about. Why bother putting these on splits printouts when you can easily look on winsplits the night of the race and find everything you want in one place?

but half the fun of oirienteering is comparing splits with others on your course just after the finish...............

Re: Splits Printouts
Agree with madmike that need to have splits printed out at download. Not every race has results monitors and sometimes it can be a while before being able to view splits online. So splits on the printouts are good to be able to compare with other orienteers, or just to confirm how good or bad some legs were.
Don't need placings as these change over the course of an event.

I was about to say exactly the same - for the price they charged that was very poor.

I disagree. Splits are a great thing and need to be available immediately you finish.
I believe that many competitors who are mid-way down the list like to compare their splits with all their mates in Assembly or the car park while everything is fresh in their minds. Analysis that evening or next day using routegadget and splits analysis is great from a coaching perspective, but a quick analysis just after finishing is definitely fun for all. Now if only the paper it was printed on lasted a bit longer in the rain (if it is the mini teleprinter things).
Note that when normal printers rather than mini ones are used some clubs re-use old waterproof maps just like they do for control descriptions so it isn't that much of a waste of paper.

Just a waste of ink
Some people want them, some people don't. Perhaps we can make it an option, like getting a receipt.

Optional is good.
As I recall, at least for the Open classes, at O-Ringen if you wanted splits you had to go and queue a 2nd time in a different tent for them.

Re: Splits Printouts
I'm pretty sure we got our splits automatically at last year's Oringen.
By all means make them optional but don't for goodness sake get rid of them. The instant feedback is of great interest to at least some of us.

True of course, but in the example the relative positions are very revealing. Despite hitting 2 cleanly, my cautious route put me much further down the field than on any of the other legs, including my error at 15. And I got that feedback immediately, which has to be good. Hasn't it?

Re: Splits Printouts
I agree with keeping splits - and absolutely with any added value we can easily provide. No sense in stopping them just because one or two people dont feel the need. After all just because one person didn't fancy having commentary at the British Sprints last year we didn't.....oh.

Short answer: yes
Long answer: There are other ways of providing instant feedback that don't involve printers...
