Re: Whos responsibility?
I remember a JK where an ESOC member got a map with the contours (all the brown) upside down, think he got a full refund and an apology. Which is the only feasible solution, not sure how the event can possibly think blaming the competitor for not checking is a reasonable way forward.

Does it say something about our sport that this post gained more interaction in 10 hours (overnight) than Mike Shires' 31st Jan post about publicity achieved in 10 days?

I didn't know about any marks on maps, that I should/should not be checking!

No - on IOF duty in Tallinn for the weekend instead. Missed out on a ticket for Friday's Wales - England match too, so it wasn't great timing ...
Have been trying to find out who did win (not 6Nations!) and am still on tenterhooks

The Scottish 6 Days technical manual page 14:
Lessons learnt from previous events is that maps need to have 2 register marks at opposing corners (diagonal) to highlight where the paper may have twisted or stretched, one isn't good enough as it's any difference between the 2 that reveals a problem.
My wife has spent many hours as a controller checking maps, yes thousands of them. She normally does it over a few separate shifts so as not to get too brain dead.
CONTROLLING
...
It is the responsibility of the Day Controllers (with assistance from Day Planners if required) to check all maps and loose description sheets before delivery to the starts.
Each individual map should be checked visually to ensure overprint accuracy, and to check that map colours have been printed evenly and consistently with no missing map colours, which can occasionally occur with litho printing.
Loose description sheets should be checked for perfect consistency with control descriptions printed on the course maps.

ISOM requires at least three registration marks placed in non-symmetrical position, and recommends a separate colour-wheel as well.
