Race the Castles

Forvie is growing on me after my first event there a few years back. Once you get your head round the size of the contours its really technically challenging and great fun.

You must have been running a different course to me. Technically, I found this was one of the easiest races this year. Physically, a different matter!

I was really impressed with the quality of the two weekends: four very different areas, all excellent (yes, Stirling felt distinctly different to Edinburgh, both superb in their own ways), great organisation and spectating: the quality of the elite was amply demonstrated in more ways than one this weekend. We had two brilliant weekends which has definitely wetted our appetite for next summer! I should have said this in my last post, but didn't: a huge thank you to everybody concerned.

I feel the need for some "thank you"s, but there are too many people who did great jobs for RtC to mention individuals.

Lots of organisations within orienteering had the clout to stand behind the event, but most were too risk-averse, and only the SOA were willing to buy into it. SOA backed the concept and underwrote the finances from the start. SOA took the risk, and if there's credit to go round, a huge amount must go to the SOA and its president Roger Scrutton.

I am very proud to live in Scotland - plenty of "can-do folk" to take the initiative. Well done again Scotland!

I must admit I didn't check it, as when I did a test upload the georeferencing of the map and course data put the controls in exactly the right place without me doing anything. So when I did the actual one I didn't even look at it. I better report this to Simon E.

Can someone check if the georeferencing is working by uploading a gps track and seeing if it auto locates or needs adjusting. This is only for the relay RG at Forvie.

You can, but this being nopesport I'll misrepresent you and take offense anyway

RtC was not professional. It was volunteer amateurs: words derived from the Latin for people doing what they want to do for the love of it.

The one professional involved didn't actually do very much....the team of volunteers were so competent.

Oops, sorry. We did have some professionals on board, freefall, some mappers, fabian4. But they delivered amateurly .
not amateurishly: and don't get me started on pronouns

Thanks to all involved, they were 5 really good events + we had a great week on Deeside and Speyside in between.

Loved the Edinburgh Prologue, so much from a small area. 3 of us all crossed the Western Approaches Road for the first time and uttered the "How the **** do we get down there!"

Saturday felt a slightly different area to being used to from the BW. With an excellent assembly area and great weather

Sunday at Stirling being thrown straight into the super complex castle with people stood or running around was great.

Balmoral was a challenge...Brown course a bit long (?) a nice visibility forest but bouldery in large areas and the slopes coming down to the spectator control and finish weren't of the same quality as the rest.

Forvie was a pleasant dune complex, a mixture of 'big' features made simplification easy on some legs bu then the subtle areas were suitably technical to catch you out.

I think the SOA clubs do such a good job of offering value in their orienteering events by grouping them like this...which is in no way indicative of any Scottish sterotype traits
