Websites
I've made a school orinteering website in Publisher and have web space at home. I downloaded "Terrapin FTP" software to upload it onto the web but it doesn't work. I think it might have a problem with the file having .pub at the end of i not .html or something. I was wondering if anyone knows a way around this or can suggest what I'm doing wrong! Is it just that I can't use publisher? Thanks.

.pub files wont be recognised by the server jo. u need it to be .htm or.html
i dont know publisher, but try going to file>save as... then change the file typ to web page, or html or something like that.
then upload again, and delete the .pub files from the server. the homepage should be called index.htm or index.html
if u cant save as a different format, there is always the old faithful of changing the ending of the files to .htm might work, but back up the old files first and only do it as a last resort.
hope this helps.
edit: just found this -

Hmmm . When I'm on Publisher and do save as it wont change it to index.html - if I do that it imediately puts .pub after it. If however i try changing the name of the file once in Terrapin it says it may become unusable. I tryed it anyway (Having a backup copy) but when i uploaded it onto the web it comes up in symbols which goes on forever.

do u have frontpage? it comes with microsoft office i think. if so, try copying and pasting the info from the pages into frontpage documents.
if u can do that and save them, it should work.

Somewhere in publisher there is a "create as web page" or even "create as web site" option. You can actually do the whole site in publisher and not have to use ftp to upload. (It is years since I used Publisher, hence the vagueness)
It might be worth searchng for "web page" in the publisher help or try this

Definitive answer from the site I just gave the link to:
This applies to Publisher 2003 but something similar in earlier versions.
Convert a print publication to a Web publicationOpen the print publication you want to convert to a Web publication.
.
On the File menu, click Convert to Web Publication.
Follow the instructions in the Convert to Web Publication Wizard
This applies to Publisher 2003 but something similar in earlier versions.

Does your school have a website and/or domain?
You might persuade them to host your site and then you would not have to worry about who pays for the space to display lots of lovely pictures!
(Seriously, lots of schools now have permanent direct access to the internet and have their own servers on site, so would have no problem giving you lots of space and hopefully providing better web tools than publisher too)

not really, publisher can be just as good as some other webtools if you can use it properly, and most people already understand publisher so it's better for simpler websites...althought front page is alot easier to use
but ye, check with your school, i got space from my school website to do similar sort of stuff
