The Northern Echo has an article about Patons and Baldwins, who were a big employer in Darlington, and were known for providing good social and sporting facilities for it's workers. I'm sure I remember them having an orienteering club? There is going to be an exhibition (29 July-8 Aug) celebrating 60 years of Lingfield Point - the now revitalised factory. They are collating memories and memorabilia, so any former club members may be interested in contributing or visiting.

Fairly sure that the original Boltby Forest on the edge of the NY Moors was a Patons map. I'll have to try and find it!

CLOK has a nice "Paton and Baldwin" trophy for the male winner at the CLOK club champs. Presumably donated by them? Hallmarked silver, weighs quite a bit, (insured...).

yep Boltby Forest 1974 map is by Patons OC. I've also got a "The Stang Forest" map from 1973

Re: Patons & Baldwins OC
I started orienteering when I was a pupil at Darlington Grammar School. The O club was organised by a teacher called Bill Hodgson who I think was a member of Patons. This would be 1969.
My first event was at Black Banks, Hamsterley Forest, on a b/w 6 inch OS map. Six controls to be taken in any order. Can still remember the excitement of finding my first control ("the re-entrant"), especially as nobody had remembered to tell me what a control looked like!
Still got the map somewhere along with The Stang and a few others.

Re: Patons & Baldwins OC
I have a map (and the results) of Silton (scale 1:24000) from the 'Beehive' event of 27/02/1972. The 'Beehive Trophy' was won by Jenny Tennant (DVO).
Other prize winners were S.Dutfield (KESOC) who won the Richmond 900 trophy in the Junior 'A' class and to Harold Harung (UMOC) who won the Senior Men 'A'.
The organisers comments are interesting 'We were again pleased by the success of the single clock for timimg, linking start and finish with an intercom.

Clarissa Napier, now I believe CLOK, was a member
She was a member of Kenton Kanterers, then moved south, last heard of with NOR.

Re: Patons & Baldwins OC
And from March 1970, a Patons OC Silton map at 1:10,560. But then an Ebor map of Over Silton from December 1970 at 1:21,120 which overlaps with part of the Patons map, but with quite significant differences. I've also got a Patons Stang 1 :20,000 map fron November 1970 - this one in colour.
How on earth anyone found such controls as 'a bend on the footpath' or 'a cairn' is a mystery, not to mention why anyone actually came back for more....

Re: Patons & Baldwins OC
Thanks for all the comments.
Seems there is enough memories and old maps out there to be worth someone from CLOK contacting the exhibition organisers? The trophy could be a good start - "the workforce may have dispersed, but the name lives on with this trophy awarded annually by CLOK, the local orienteering club" - sort of thing? Photo of trophy with current holder? Old and new maps of Silton? With the links to CLOK website of course.
All before my time as an orienteer, and I'm not in CLOK, but it would be a shame to miss a chance for publicity.
