Yes we can learn from other sports and independent advisers but its time that BO stopped using this as a panacea for all ills and started looking to the membership for advice. We're not all a bunch of prehistoric amateurs.

100% agree, and, as you imply, extends beyond coaching.

Have we not recently had this, but the membership (committees) refused to say yes and nod their heads. They had their own opinions, voiced them and were rebuked and disbanded....

Well, are we all happy now with the revised selections? We've got 2 full teams but the policy still hasn't been strictly adhered to I think(might be wrong before I'm shot down). Well done to all athletes chosen. See Wales has provided 25% of teams

If the appeal against the men's selection was upheld, how is it that the men's selection has stayed the same?

The appeal wasn't against the selection, it was against the fact that the Selection Policy was not followed as other races were taken into account. So the reselection was without taking the other races into account which can have the same end result.

lots of people whinged about no-full women's team
some man appealed based on failure to follow due process
this gives an excuse to reopen selections
man will get nowhere, extra women will be selected, though this has nothing to do with due process.

Pleased to see that we now have a full women's team. Meg C-D will be busy.
Disappointed (for Ben) but not surprised that the men's team is unchanged. It would be very interesting to hear the thinking behind this. There were obviously some very difficult choices to make. I hope you've had some feedback this time Ben?
I do wonder how much the outcome was determined by the possibility of further protests (and possible claims for abhortive expenses) if anyone was 'de-selected'?

common sense prevailed - at last! Why the membership entered into an outpoor of dissent should NOT be ignored and these mistakes repeated, just because this has been put right.

Let's not forget all the stress the selected athletes who had de-selection hanging over them have had to endure and the disappointment of those athletes not selected, for no good reason, only for them to be now selected.

Unfortunately the Mrs threw mine out some years ago.

If this pans out as 1991 then someone will drop out through injury, Ben will get in only to mis-punch in the Short Race...

We will no doubt find out if this is the case when the JEC selections are announced later this year.

I think the young people who took the trouble to go through the appeal process deserve a great deal of respect. The process was both complex and stressful and from what I've seen and heard was followed diligently and competently by the athletes concerned.

It seems that the principles of ignoring the selection policy, poor communication before and after the selections and claims that somehow this was all in the interests of the athletes themselves caused as much anger as the original decisions.

Ben in particular deserves a good deal of credit for investing his time on a point of principle without holding any real hope of reversing the original decision.

Let's hope that BO moves quickly to resolve the underlying problems and also recognize that the qualities of determination and passion exhibited by these athletes are the very qualities needed for future success.
