On my Windows 7 / IE9 laptop all I see on the JK2014 RG2 site is a blank white screen

IE9 is the culprit here. A simple upgrade to IE10 or IE11 should do the trick as IE9 does not support HTML5, needed for RG2.

Or try a different browser ...

I used to do put routes up all the time, then the java thing stopped me being able to use RG1, the first time I used RG2 I got so far then it wouldn't save (or something I can't remember I just know it wouldn't work). In Oz it's back to RG1 and the java applet issue - so will take a look at Quickroute/DOMA. Sometimes nice to see where I actually went.

I'm always dumfounded when I get home from a race and results aren't even up, far less RG.

I don't really know how fast results usually appeared pre-internet, I vaguely remember getting an envelope with pages of results in it. With the state of the web these days there's no excuse to get results/RG online within a few hours of a race.

The best would get them in the post same night from a standard event. Receiving by the end of the week was good. As quoted above, there were instances where results didn't come out for weeks. The issue was less the internet than e-punching: checking control cards was a serious job! I can still remember watching the punch checking with considerable awe at my first O-ringen in 1978: 5 finish lanes, each with a huge pantechnicon parked next to it, with row after row of punch checkers, time calculators etc inside, plus marquees full of the same. The manpower demands were humungous if you were going to get results out at all promptly. It was a good test of mental arithmetic too!

Punch checking was always a nightmare but on a wet day almost impossible.

Then there was matching raffle ticket numbers to finish times. Happy days.

I only tried orienteering a couple of times in the 70's and was totally put off by the clart on with the punches, bits of paper etc (and the forest flies) - it was only when I tried again post electronification that I was totally smitten.
re speed of results - a big event with pre entries and a computer team shouldn't present much of a problem, but I find the smaller events quite time consuming. You have to input all the non bof entries at home later if a mini printer has been used - and after one event, the entries sheet had disintegrated in the rain. A lesson learned...

I think the problem with texting results is that it's usually only your time/position, and for most running type races that's good enough. But orienteers usually want to know where they are in relation to their peers. Also split times are often informative.

For comparison, FinnSpring individual figures:
2008 15%
2011 16%
2013 12%
2014 7.5% (after two days of drawing)

I believe 2014 may get close to 10% but most likely will be less than 2013. There has been no campaigns or anything, it RG1 (new) just published 30 hours after the race (day late) without much notice.

I believe popularity is now at low point and RG1&2 will get the some of the old popularity back. For example you may use it as an easy tool for sharing your "smart" moves in social media.

Have now uploaded my JK routes for days 2 and 3 (gradually getting through the catching-up!).

A few weeks ago I uploaded a route and was delighted to see that, after I'd input the time before my start time when I started the GPS unit, it automatically assigned fixed points at each control site so each section of the trace was fitted beautifully to the map. As that feature appears not to be present in the JK installation of RG2, was this the updated version of RG1?

It's a real shame there are now 2 different versions of RG that work from the same back end. A collaboration would have been nice!

Now it is at 8.2% and doesn't look like it would get to 10% anytime soon.

Anyway, here is some relay fun from there (day2).

Collaboration isn't that easy when underlying platform is so different. The new RG1 is build on leafletjs and the work they do with issues like browser/mobile device compatibility will eventually benefit RG1. That's why it was easy to make RG1 work with older IE versions and implementing drawing routes with mobile devices was quite easy. On the other hand RG2 can do things it is not easy or possible to do with RG1 (things leafletjs API does not support), so RG2 kind of may have more potential - it just may take more work to get things done but whenit's done it may be better and faster. However, projects still can share ideas and possibly some code, also RG2 can be made fulfil UK O community needs without having to necessarily worry too much about our needs here (like live GPS tracking, handling Jukola and so on). Also, RG2 was a good excuse for me to preserve the old retro layout - RG2 is a modern accordion powered one page style app, new RG1 is good for us old farts who not want to learn new things but like to use RG as it used to be for over a decade.
