WOC and WUOC test races

For those who are interested, this weekend sees the WOC and WUOC test races, being held in the lake district. Details and start lists can be found on SROC’s website and hopefully results will be there afterwards too.

• Friday 28th: Eggerslack – middle
• Saturday 29th: Whitbarrow – long
• Sunday 30th: Keswick – sprint

These are selection races for the following:

WOC 2014: 5th – 13th July in Italy: http://www.woc2014.info/. Formats and quotas are different from previous years:

• Sprint (3 men and 3 women, with qualifier race)
• Middle (2 men in each, 3 women in each - based on GBR’s world rankings, no qualifying races at WOC, see http://orienteering.org/foot-orienteering/rules/)
• Long (quotas same as middle; no qualifier)
• Relay (1 men’s and 1 women’s team)
• Mixed sprint relay (1 team with 2 men / 2 women)

No limit on overall team size. This weekend are the only selection races (actually more precisely they are the only “primary indicator of current form”, which is probably the most significant factor in making selections, but not the only one).

WUOC 2014: 12th – 16th August in Czech: http://wuoc2014.cz/. Formats: Sprint, middle, long (4 men and 4 women in each), relay (2 men’s and 2 women’s teams) and mixed sprint relay (1 team). Max 6 men and 6 women in the overall team. The selection races are this weekend, and also BUCS which has already happened (results).

With WOC coming up its disappointing there's so little information about this. Several big names from last year missing. People sitting out the Long race. Would anyone in the know like to preview it?

No replies here, not a squeak from BOF, nothing from the athletes on Project2015, why are we holding WOC if nobody cares?

I cared enough to look.

I tried looking at the SROC website for more information, but cannot find any. This might be because the bulk of the front page is blocked by my employer's access policies, it being derived from a blog. I tried looking at the SROC fixture list but according to that this isn't happening.

I tried looking at the BO website, but nothing there. Not in the fixture list, not in the news section.

I did find the start list on Fabian - only to confirm how out of touch I am. Some of the names are familiar, one or two people I actually know but they are the over 35s.

I would also like to know more. If anybody can tell us who is in contention, who is missing and why I would be interested. Also if anybody can give a direct link to the race information I would be grateful.

In the Men's the "best" start last. In the Women's the "best" start first.

Selection is likely to be very tight this year as there are lots of people around the same level. This will be especially evident in the sprint discipline.

I noticed you were the most notable absentee: Are you injured? Do you have any route to get on the team?
I agree the Sprint will be super hard to select, especially since some athlete will have the Long race in their legs, and others wont.

I was going to post an article on the BO site today, given that there were already several other BO news stories earlier this week. I still will....

Meanwhile, I wonder what map scale the Long race will use?

At the start, both 1:150000 and 1:10000 maps will be available and you may choose which scale you use. There are sufficient maps of each type to accommodate the whole start list. Some runners may wish to take both, in which case they will probably need to bring an A3 poly bag. Both scale maps are digitally printed on waterproof paper. The 1:15000 map is A4 and the 1:10000 map is A3. The 1:10000 map is simply an enlargement of the 1:15000 map, so control circles (9mm) and descriptions are therefore also enlarged.

Slightly off track, but is it just me who thinks the mixed relays would be more fun if you could choose your gender running order - might make it more tactical rather than a mass pack race?

And of course running order would be kept secret until the start line ....the spectacle would be much much better than the charge round together sprint relay that we saw in Turkey.

I like the fact that selection races are a separate race with only those really in contention there. Just a shame there's not a little more coverage on nope/BOF/wherever sites. I would be interested for one...

Interesting that the men are fastest-last and the women seem to be fastest-first. Any reasoning?
