White outline around urban control numbers
On urban / sprint maps you often have a white border / outline around the control numbers on the map, to make them more easily visible at a glance against the typically dark background of buildings, roads, olive green etc. Is this an approved standard (I didn't see it in ISSOM)? Regardless of that, is it normal to do it (I'm hoping some urban / sprint fanatic who does lots of events can give a view here)? Does anyone know the typical width of the white border? I'm using Purple Pen which allows increments of 0.01mm (Event -> Customize Course Appearance menu...).

It's not part of the standard. It does help with legibility, but you have to be very careful. The white strip looks like a passable route, and ends of it can create gaps in uncrossable features. Since good urban courses take you way off the red line its quite time-consuming and mission-critical to check the placement of all numbers.

I find O.1mm is sufficient to greatly improve legibility.
