I was looking at results and maps for the Mediterranean Champs and came across what for me a was a new way of magnifying the maps that were displayed - http://mco2014.ori-estarreja.pt/?page_id=1789

Not Jethro's point but how can Portugal , which the last time I looked had only an Atlantic coast, host the Mediterranean Champs

Not only does Portugal host that for the (at least) 2nd year. But Italy hosts this http://www.orienteering.it/macro.php?su ... 913_111503
for at least the 2nd year.

And that was a nice magnifier Jethro

But at least most of Italy is a peninsula sticking out into the Med

How come Israel, an Asian country competes in European competitions?

Israel is a full member of the EOC since 1994. Until 1981 it was a member of the Asian Games Federation (a predecessor of Olympic Council of Asia)

EOC = European Olympic Committees

And IOF follows the IOC in defining which countries are in which regions.

That still doesn't explain how Israel is in 'Europe'

They also compete in the Eurovision Song Contest (and unlike Portugal they are on the Med)
Now if Lebanon want to be in Europe.....

Many Asian countries are Islamic and would not accept competing against or associating with the Jewish state of Israel, so this pragmatic solution was adopted in many international situations.
