The basic principle is comparison by position of individual runners on several courses. I think at first there were not as many classes as there are now, but I don't remember how many. A club's score was for a certain number on each course - say 3 runners on each of 6 courses, total 18.
Many clubs had enough runners to get out a full team.
To be clear I am not proposing this as a change, but in case it is of interest I have been able to find the Cup rules for 1986, the first year it was aligned with the calendar year. There were 18 counters per club, 3 on each of 6 courses. Running up was allowed. The courses were
A: M21
B: M20, M35
C: M18, M40, M45, W21
D: M16, M14, M50, W20, W18, W35
E: M55, M60, W16, W40, W45, W50
F: M12, M65, W14, W12, W55, W60, W65.
55 clubs entered. Derwent Valley won, the first winners from outside Yorkshire.
