As you can see, it's not an https thing at all as all three of these RG sites now work fine. The advantage of adding sites to the exception list as and when (it doesn't take long), is that you don't have to risk dropping Java security settings to medium.

Re: Routegadget
Paul,
Could you alias (or whatever the term is) www.club.routegadget.co.uk/club to www.routegadget.co.uk/club - then we'd only need one entry in the Java security site list for all the clubs you host.
ps - alternatively - the site-exception list is stored as plain text in a file called exception.sites under the %appdata% folder, specifically in
c:\users\<username>\appdata\locallow\sun\java\deployment\security\
- so given a text file of all the club URLs on the Routegadget site we could just copy it there instead of each typing the lot.

Re: Routegadget
Without me doing anything you can access club accounts without using the sub-domain.
So http://www.routegadget.co.uk/club/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi
(or in some cases http://www.routegadget.co.uk/club/club/reitti.cgi)
works the same as
http://www.club.routegadget.co.uk/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi
(or in some cases http://www.club.routegadget.co.uk/club/reitti.cgi)
So if you add http://www.routegadget.co.uk to your exceptions list and access any clubs gadget via the top address format it should work. But you will need to edit the link that you click from a clubs website. Unless the club has changed all the links it's using to that format.
There is a small variation in the way some clubs are set up, in that the cg-bin folder could be named the same as the subdomain. This was to avoid caching issues with Java. If you visited 2 different club RG's and they happened to share the same map number the browser could display the map from the previous club RG you looked at. So when I discovered this was an issue I started renaming the cgi-bin so each url was unique.
So if there is no cgi-bin in the url address replace cgi-bin with the club:
http://www.routegadget.co.uk/club/club/reitti.cgi

Re: Routegadget
Yes that works Paul. Doesn't that mean you'd only need one certificate rather than the 70-odd you mentioned earlier?
Maybe not worth it now with v2, and as you say clubs would have to amend links unless there's a way for the server to redirect the address that doesn't fall foul of the Java security check.

If this could be arranged through the clubs then if I understand you correctly a single exception would be all that is required without a code-sign certificate having to be bought.
Since it sound like RG2 is very close then maybe we don't even need to do that, but if it was further away then the cost per club for a certificate would be low, albeit per year.

Re: Routegadget
Well I'm reasonably computer literate (> 25 yrs professional experience) and I've tried the most straight-forward suggestions here (exlcuding lowering the basic Java security level setting) without any progress. I fear that the majority of the user base will not fare any better.
Basically this means to me, and I suspect many other Routegadget users who lack either the expertise or time to sort it out that this product is sadly currently defunct. I know the product was developed through a lot of time and skill freely given and sorry to be negative but unless this is fixed quite quickly I can see interest in using it at all evaporating,

Re: Routegadget
I've posted an article about ways round the Java problems on the RouteGadget UK site, but accept that it's not ideal and you do need to be a bit tech savvy.
But the good news is that with Simon Errington's help his Java free version of RouteGadget is now installed on every club account running under RouteGadget UK. The link to access it is:
http://www.club.routegadget.co.uk/rg2
Just change club to the same abbreviation used for the original version.
All events already uploaded will be available. There are still a few bugs with score courses and the manager side (to upload new events) is still a work in progress, but for most people it should all be working.

Re: Routegadget
It looks as though Jagge has been working on a Java free version of Routegadget too. He posted this on Facebook yesterday:
Here is current state of my week old study for Java free Routegadget UI:
http://routegadget.net/rgjs/rgjs.cgi?eventid=7
You should be able to:
- pan with mouse or touch screen
- zoom with button, pinch zoom or mouse scroll.
- change language
- select class/course
- select runners (some known problems with iPad here)
- view their route choises
- see split times as table
- view comments
- see legend
- mouse over legend (or tap with tablets) the route for that athlete should be highlighted
- mouse over (or tap) split time table should highlight route choice of that for that leg if person has route availabe (asterix in front of name)
- mouse over track on map should show runner's name as tooltip (plan is to shoe show split time too, now there is name + result), works also on android tablet with touchpad/mouse.
not implemented at all yet:
- digitizing/drawing route choices
- gps functionality
- animations
- etc etc
There is some known issues, like ipad athlete choice issue, some layot issues and bad color selection for legend (all selecterd runner can end up having same color etc.).
Works with my Win7 ( Firefox and Chrome), Android tablet (stock browser and an old Opera beta).
The plan is not tying to do something exciting and fancy, the goal is simply having old basic functionality and getting rid of Java without losing too much functionality and keeping the look and feel close enough to make transition easy and transparent for users. I will go on with this and missing features only if this looks promising enough.

Re: Routegadget
Success
I have Routegadget back working after installing the latest version of Java! I am not particularly computer savvy and would recommend others try this. It wasn't difficult.
I have Windows 7 and, based on the advice above, this is what I clicked on:-
Start button
All Programs
Java
Configure Java (This brings up the 'Java Control Panel')
Security
Edit Site List...
Add
Then typed in the URL for the RG I wanted (eg. http://www.euoc.routegadget.co.uk/)
OK
Then got a warning message but just kept going Continue or OK. (I left the Security Level set to High as recommended.) Routegadget then worked with just the usual warning message as before.
I have so far added 3 clubs and will add more as required. Definitely worth doing and I hope more people will do this and not be put off by some of the doom and gloom above!

Re: Routegadget
I just posted a new version of routegadget, 5 years after the previous update. There is plenty of changes, but it is written RG2 in mind, so back end remains untouched so it should have no effect on RG2. And as before routes added with either can be viewed with both. Some things are still half baked goal is to get some improvements done before the spring season begins here in Finland.

Re: Routegadget
Screen capture video for illustrating core functionality:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5osiINZFdSo
There is some new features, like mouse over effects, simple analysis, mode for drawing route with touch screen/finger, GPS track auto-positioning using split times & timing offset (map doesn't need to be geo-referenced to auto-position gps track). There will be UI layout changes, but this functionality should be there somewhere. Built on html5/javascript, so Java troubles are gone.
I believe there is not much need for this here since RG2 is doing great job, but I thought it's good to know this new version with these features is available. Some of you may get to use it in Jukola.

Re: Routegadget
Update - the very latest RouteGadget comes now with html5/javascript based SplitsBrowser baked in, so Java plug-in is not needed for it either. The SplitsBowser version old RG used to come with was quite old, this new one has nice new features, like this crossing runners thing.

Re: Routegadget
Last update before nopesport gets unplugged:
- GPS tracks can now be added also with iphone/ipad. There is no file upload feature in iOS browser, but one can copy-paste gpx link/url (like garmin connect link).
- Live GPS tracking used to be still powered by Java. Now it i Java-free and live tracking can be watched also with smart phones and tablets. That live GPS tracing thing was the last public feature still used to use java.
If you still see java version of RG still being used somewhere, suggest upgrading it.

So how do you get to SplitsBrowser (i.e. those progressograph things), from within RG2?
