n.b. since 2012 BOF has shifted its "take" from membership to events.

and the explanation for this was to spread the costs equally between everyone who competes. However the profit making from the British Championships and JK seems to be BOF exploiting the committed orienteers. There shouldn't be any reason why they don't take the same per person levy from the British Championships as from any other event, even if to do this would mean raising the levy across the board.

Anyone got an old map of the relay area?

I think much will depend on the standard of the planning - the long (3.5km) walk to the start for some courses suggests that they are trying to use the best bits at least.

If, as in previous years 'Short' course winners get NO prizes, the reason quoted here before is that Only LONg course competitors are seen as 'true' British Champions - Fair enough, but if so, then surely Short Course competitors shouldnt be charged the same entry fee if they are being treated as 'second class' competitors?

Absolute nonsense. Whatever prizes there are are almost certainly sponsored and the only cost to the organisers is a few not-exactly-expensive medals.

Next thing you'll be saying that Short doesn't need as much effort to set out as Long, and don't involve as much orienteering, so should be cheaper.

And on that basis, old people's courses should obviously always be cheaper than M21s.

Given the cost of travelling and accommodation completely dwarfs the entry fees for every significant orienteering event, I find this whole thread to be bordering on the pathetic, and it would hardly be surprising if your targets at the apparent evil-ness that is BOF roll their eyes and don't pay any attention to threads that maybe should be listened to.

It's the most important race of the year. People will have tried very hard to make it as good as it possibly can be. Pricing any event is a matter of guesswork. I will pay whatever is asked because I am not yet entirely cynical and still have a degree of trust in and goodwill towards the organisers.

I managed the Brown 9km 285m in 60:12 - winner did 59:54. I remember it as very fast and was not able to interpret the map at the fast speed - some of the old mine workings needed great care.

Is it so crazy? My running club puts on a 20/10 mile race (the 20 mile being 2 laps and the 10 mile 1 lap), and you pay more for the longer race, despite the fact that there's absolutely no extra work involved for the club. But perhaps a better way to pose the question is why non-championship courses (colour-coded) and Short championship courses should be priced differently? Having said that, I agree with the others who say that, compared with other activities (whether road running or watching football), the price isn't that unreasonable.

Sloop - I'd be very much surprised if the event can get the sort of sponsorship you are talking about. When I organised the BNC a couple of years ago the supposed "free, sponsored buffs" had to be paid for! I'd already sorted out other prizes so refused to pay for these as I hadn't budgetted for them and had no spare money on an entry of 300 .

What a poisoned chalice BOC has become. All your best area embargoed, all your best and most talented members exhausted and with a substantial proportion of the profits creamed off it's hard to see what's in it for the organising clubs any more. I should think the regions are beginning to dread their turn at BOC and the JK coming round. Personally I'll probably put my travelling money towards going to the Tamar Triple the previous weekend although The Scottish might do well out of people making a week of it.

I do feel sorry for the people putting it on and think their hands are tied.
For all events, not just this one, we need very early pre-info with estimates of costs,(perhaps bands could be introduced to give an idea if actual fees aren't known),courses available, walks and dogs.
This would allow people to make informed decisions at an early stage and budget and book accommodation etc accordingly.
Again, no dogs has appeared on the info, and like JK, this will no doubt cause problems for some people who are 'organised' and booked early.
I'm surprised it wasn't published very early on JK info as one of the people on here who was quite vociferous about Dalegarth dogs ban is involved in JK.
On another note, I don't know how NEOA can manage to put on such a large event on their own - well done!

I presume BOF require X profit from BOC and JK wherever they are each year?
This seems unfair on regions like NEOA where numbers are always less than (say) NWOA. I feel BOF should adjust their profit requirements depending on where the major events are each year.

I'm surprised they're offering Green and Blue colour coded courses. I thought the norm was White to Orange (or maybe Light Green). I can't blame any average orienteers (such as Lostagain ) who enter these rather their age class. Marge has certainly indicated that she will. The Green and Blue will probably be the largest classes...
