1. Serious congratulations to whichever of the planners did the Short Score - absolutely excellent both days (apart from the over-long run in on day 2). Lots of tempter distractions early on, and lots of options later on. Took us just over 5 minutes to leave the planning area both days - but time well spent as I think we nailed a pretty much optimal strategy each time.
2. Serious congratulations to Nick Barrable for his Elite win. There are very few in the orienteering world who compete and manifestly excel at every form of our amazing game - sprints through urban through forest to mountains and even a dabble at Trial-O for a well-earned rest. I think it is very encouraging that the editor of our favourite magazine should have such an all-round understanding of stuff - certainly shouldn't be accused of not knowing what he's talking about !

Re: OMM Predictions
Nick confirmed yesterday he has been part of winning teams on all the courses, I don't know if this achievement was mentioned at the prizegiving. Maybe there could be a special OMM grand slam award?
Something for others to aim at in future?
My first OMM and I'm so impressed, particularly with the volunteers, all so friendly and enthusiastic. I didn't realise many travel across half the country to give up their weekend.
Did anybody else hear that clap of thunder at about 4am? Unbelievably loud, unless I was dreaming it or it was the sound of blisters bursting in a neighbouring tent?

(assuming he did the cross country rather than the scores and not the other way round).

You still need to win the D then? Freefall Jnr (Rory) won this at the weekend.
At least that stops them going for prizes on it next year.

Ravinous is merely following what the OMM keeps saying. That is the D class is just the new name for what was the C class in 1996

Re: OMM Predictions
If I were publicising NATO I'd point out that they have 2 alumni amongst the winners.
Jonny Malley was a member (and his mother and grandfather still are) and so was Rory Matheson (and we'll even admit that his father (Freefall) and mother were) but I'm not so I won't

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Re: OMM Predictions
Freefall - in 2010 they introduced a new course. It has a score element in it on both days (but not this year as Bad weather courses meant it was chopped on Day 2!). It was a bit longer than C and a bit shorter than B. So they called it C. But as they cant have 2 courses called C, they called the shorter course 'D'. Hence my reference to 'old C' and 'new C' in the list.
'Old C' = D
'Old C' = D

Nah ... you have to win the proper D Course to have the full set.

Old C = D.
Or do you want the tradition/rule of class winners moving up to the next course to be broken. Oh, and the wails of complaint that old happen if a winner on a longer course ran D with a new partner.
Well done to Nick on a full set. I remember him and Johnny Crickmore taking over an hour out of us on the first new C on Dartmoor, leading to people questioning who else was in the chasing start, no-one.

Re: OMM Predictions
It was nice that the chasing start involved the top mixed and female teams too this year. Being in the chase on Sunday allowed us to escape the tent earlier and watch the sunrise over the hills before the rain came to stay. Maybe a chase feels more meaningful, for those taking part and the start officials, if there are a few more teams.
