Long distance, winning time = 42 mins. Surely the EWT should be 1 hour for these young fit girls and boys.

The [url=http://orienteering.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/EYOC-Rules.pdf‎]rules[/url] say W16 35-40mins, M16/W18 40-45mins, M18 45-50mins. 3 out of 4 long races were won in the appropriate range, with two M16s breaking 40 mins.

Not every nation believes that the best way to develop junior orienteers is to make them run very long distances (but then I expect few of them can match our enviable record for retaining juniors through to the senior ranks...)

I too am a bit wary of our 18s running the same as the 20s at some of our events. Moving from M16A to M20E is a big jump. At least I think that is the sort of thing that is done at some [selection?] events isn't it? Although I suppose that is fair enough for JWOC selection - you have to prove you are strong enough for the longer distances.

Andrew Barr managed to persuade his parents to let him step up to the Mighty thistle for day 2 of last year's purple thistle. Not only did he finish 7th only 2 mins behind Dixie Dean and his splits showed no sign of tiring.

I wouldn't advocate recommending youngsters to go so far, but with it all coming from him it why not? Its good not to be too proscriptive.
