This'll be the 3rd time in the Brecons, who will win the Elite this year?
How about a SYO victory - Oli and Nick both have strong partners. Come to think of it, how many SYO (or DPFR) Elite winners have there been.
Obviously Duncan Archer and Steve B are in teams to be reckoned with.
Maybe it is time for a "local" victory from the the Swansea orienteers Sander Vaher (Welsh O Champion) and Timo Sild.
Hopefully my suggestions above are a bit more accurate the last time when it was in Brecons when I was listed as a favourite running with Dieter Wolf by Mark Parsons - we weren't even in the Elite class!

Re: OMM Predictions
Why focus on just the elite class? What about all the others where you know people?
Will Quentin hold off the challenge of youth on C, he usually does....
Malley/Crickmore ??

1. It is THE class
2. In all the other classes it is usually trying to match which runners are most mis-matched for their class so guessing who will win is basically spotting the pot-hunters
I anticipate a strong day 2 from Quentin in any case - he always runs well on day 2

JK , your second comment conveniently forgets the various rules in place about ages. I think quite a few will be offended by your suggestion as well. Many know they will never run elite but chose a class they can still have a challenge in.

Re: OMM Predictions
Whilst there are the age categories to remember, it's a lot more difficult picking names out of the lower classes due to the larger start lists and names you may not be as aware of - the names you know are in the Elite!
Anyway, here's my 2-penneth for this year's OMM, thrown together last night: http://somewhere-in-the-between.blogspo ... mmute.html
I'm going for a Johnson/Noor win, ahead of Sander/Timo and Nick/Gustav. Duncan's partner Jim isn't running so won't know who he's teaming up with until Day1 results are up.
I remember standing at the overnight results last year and hearing someone moaning about how Quentin shouldn't be racing the D class. I pointed out that the reason he was doing it was because it was the only one his daughter could enter. The reply was something along the lines of 'well he should get a different partner then'. Heard the same thing regards Barrable and Crickmore on the C in Dartmoor (although Crickmore isn't Barrable's daughter...). Now Llewellyn and Robinson on the C in 2011 is a different matter
... I personally felt a bit uncomfortable running B last year and decided from now on I could only really get away with A/E. Got mullered by Crickmore and Bray anyway.

Re: OMM Predictions
When I did the Saunders with Alex, we were restricted to the classes we could enter. I heard a rather large person at the results moaning about the time difference, saying these ones at the top should enter a longer course. Funny thing was it was probably me slowing him down but it was him stopping me enter a longer course. Someone else suggested the large person could reduce the time difference by a bit of training.
The only place I have never heard this type of gripe is the Mourne Mountain Marathon.

Re: OMM Predictions
2 iterations back in the Brecons (about 20 years) they had the elite mid way camp at about the furthest possible point you could get from a road which was something like 6.5 miles in any of three directions. If I remember correctly it was a clear and frosty night. JK will remember it well. I was disgracefully unfit having moved to Reading earlier in the year.

The Elite overnight results are up. top10 here:
1 6:05:57 58 Steve Birkinshaw & Kim Collison
2 6:19:21 59 Nick Barrable & Gustav Bergman
3 6:21:24 47 Hugh Aggleton & Tom Gibbs
4 6:22:40 36 Sander Vaher & Timo Sild
5 6:29:54 50 Edward Catmur & Alan Cherry
6 6:31:02 26 Tim Higginbottom & Chris Near
7 6:32:04 53 Oli Johnson & Ben Abdelnoor
8 7:23:25 25 Jasmin Paris & Konrad Rawlik Mix
9 7:31:51 57 Adam Stirk & Andrew Higgins
10 7:38:16 31 Mark Ford & Jonathan Albon
Interesting, very interesting. 13min lead for Steve and Kim, but still all to play for between 2-7.
currently getting a 404 error on the other classes.

Re: OMM Predictions
Thanks for reminding me Ifor - our water bag froze overnight! Warm enough in our tent though - not much space for the cold air to get in.
Sorry DM, no offence intended: I didn't mean people winning and outclassing the opposition was their fault, but it can be easier to spot which names stand out in the lower classes whether they "have" to be in that class or not. It is therefore more challenging to try and pick the Elite winners.
Can Steve get yet another win? Anyone know how many he is on?
Can Brendan win LS for that rare distinction of having won both LS and E?
JK
(probably a member of one of the youngest ever KIMM teams at 17+15, just before our respective birthdays in Oct + Dec - Gerry agreed that O-age could be used. I don't know if anyone else managed to wangle that over the years, although I think Scoffer got into the OS Trial a year or two early)

All working this morning, here:
http://www.cix.co.uk/~neper/omm2013/
Almost a half hour lead for Malley/Crickmore on the A, with Llewellyn/Robinson 3rd, but only a couple of minutes behind 2nd.
Hodkinson/Fisher leading the B by half an hour, and womens teams Bedwell/Kilcoyne in 2nd and Daniel/Darlington in 3rd (of the womens teams).
Quentin and Zoe Harding leading the C by half an hour (and hence also leading parent/child and mixed on C), from Elkington/McCann in 2nd.
Plenty of orienteers doing well in the Score classes too.
As a planner it's always nice to set a good long leg. Check the splits for Elite leg 3 - that must be well over 20km in one leg

Are there any maps up anywhere. One long leg on the elite by the looks of it.
Ben and Oli lost time on it.

Freefall Jnr, an occasional orienteer, was leading the D course with policeman Dan. I'll be having stern words with him about choosing this "easy" option.
