If you saw the Adam Hart-Davies' prog a couple of years back you would have seen a surveyor's wheel not that different from what we use now, and I've seen a book on ancient maps where they definitely use the ISSOM symbol for a gate.

it is indeed a good translation Sunlit - complimenti a te!
The video was produced by FISO the NGB for Orienteering over here and has been uploaded by Alessio Tenani the Italian number 1 who has now overtaken the naturalised former Russian, Mamleev.
Alessio is a Forestry Policeman (Corpo di Forestale) by profession so he gets lots of practice running in the woods!
