bogle: EFF OFF! in broad irish accent
bounds over to rocky
rocky: EFF OFF! in broad scots accent

craney: eff off! in timid english accent

So what's the best dog deterrence strategy? Common approach by blokes seems to shout something rude at it loudly, then hurt it in some way but any doggy psychologists know any better?

I'm not a doggy pyschowassit but I saw a program once saying if you act submissive to the doggy it won't attack you as it already thinks it's won. If you stand up to it then it's got a point to prove and will. On the other hand if you think you can beat it why not be aggressive. Not sure I fancy a police alsatian mind.

To be submissive to a dog you have to lie down and offer it your throat - bit risky if you ask me, and it would slow you down quite a lot!

best way, swear like billeo, not only does the dog shut up, but the owner gets irate and you feel great. did it the other week while out on my bike, owner went mental so basically told him to nope off too!!

I had a "lassie" experience two events ago. A Labrador appeared out of nowhere, wagged its tail and waltzed off through the trees and as my eye followed it, I saw the control!

but like Becks said elsewhere - it's hard to make a physical statement when your only 5ft 3ins tall ( and in my case nearly 50 years old)
Here on the malvern hills I face people walking large numbers of dogs. when i complain politely that their dogs should be under control i get one of three answers
It's because your running ( ie my fault)
He just wants to be friends (!)
He's never done that before (Oh yeah!)
I have felt quite isolated with an aggressive dog owner and several aggressive dogs and no one else around. I always thank dog owners who call their animals to heel as i approach.
And then of course there's the problem of the jobby

Never turn your back on a barking dog.

I went over a stile onto a footpath to be met by a barking alsatian rising up at me. Quickly decided that plan a) should be to turn around and climb back over the stile. Turned around, got one foot on the stile, and the like F&^*$* left its teeth in my calf. Still have the fang inprints on my leg.

The upside of this was, after having a bath to clean the wounds (during which I lost some blood and could see my muscle fibres waving about like vermecelli), I felt light headed and slept remarkably well. Though can't see any doctors ordering this treatment for insomnia.

As for what plan b) should have been to repell the mad dog, err, still not sure of that ...

I'd go for the Kitch mentality - lay it out before it lays you out, but then I am 6'2" and 15 stone. As Mrs H says it's a problem for the smaller/older/female that it isn't so much for us big lads. Not sure what the answer is. The only good side to getting bitten these days is at least it should be the last bite the dog ever gives...

interestig this, cos yesterday's Opra show had a special on "hero's", there was this kid who was getting mawled by 2 dogs, and the women just lay hime face donw, and lay on top of him... afterwards the dog psychologist said cover you throat at all costs, and arms also, an attacking dog will go for these voulnerable and easy to get areas. another tactic is to twat it as hard as you can on the nose or head, in the chest to wind it or twist its ears hard as they are very sensative. he pointed out that a dog has only one means of attack, its mouth. you have 4... probably one of these is currently being mawled, which still leaves you´3 was of dealing out death chops. has advice for stopping them attaack you was dont look dogs in the eye, dont disturb sleeping, eating, or dogs with puppies, dont go into their territority, and dont run from them....

Not quite as exciting as the mauling stories, but I almost trod on a Yorkshire Terrier the other week. Running thourgh the wood with my shades on, glanced down at map, and then. .....yap yap yap...which scared the life out of me. Owner was too near to risk punting it into the undergrowth

i nearly did it yesterday will my roller blade, but i was more concenred with my other rollerblade thatwas now heading for off the tarmac... lucky dog
