Re: Swiss O week 2014 Zermatt
Enter before end of Jan for cheap rate (£192 plus transaction fees -- ie £32 a race. You enter all 6 races or nothing in the 'proper' competition classes).
Next deadline is end May. £219 (or £36.50 a race).
Entry of course includes all the public transport/cable cars you need to do all the races.
Sadly, it still doesn't look like they take Payment Cards.
You have to do a bank transfer.

welcome to Switzerland, cheap it's not! To be honest considering how much the pass for the transport would cost the races themselves probably don't work out that steep. In winter I think a lift pass something like 40 euro a day, probably not that different in summer. You do get to run with a view of the Matterhorn though.

It is still a comparative bargain - A standard return on the Gornergrat railway is 82 CHF
whilst a standard return up to the Trockener Steg costs 65 CHF and an allday Panoramic pass costs 128 CHF - Don't forget you can use the lifts etc to the morning event then go up again in the afternoon to any other location (Klein Matterhorn etc) every day in the week.

Is it possible to ski on the glacier in July?
If it's possible to orienteer and ski on the same holiday with no additional costs then it's definitely a bargain!

The week long summer lift pass you get with Entry is normall £180 if I remember right, so not too bad considering...

As previous poster says - they were certainly skiing in 2006
Here are a couple of pics taken on the rest day on the Klein Matterhorn

We've paid by credit card and it looks as if it's gone through OK - We're showing on list of entrants who have paid

I've also just paid by credit card but am a little worried that I am now the club responsible person! As long as their entries don't come off my card!

What a middle class sport orienteering is.
Enjoy Switzerland folks. The nearest we'll get is camping at the Belgian 3 days (if I can get a deal on the ferry.......)

If you think a £32 entry fee makes orienteering a 'middle class' sport
do you think other races are middle class with these entry fees? (have shown early & late fees)
Total Warrior - £50 - 90
Tough Guy £50 - 190
X Runner - £44 - 59
Tough Mudder £55 - 120
OMM - £55 per day per person
Great North Run 10km £38
Great South Run £41
Believe London Marathon & Great North Run Half Marathon are dearer than GNR10km

Re: Swiss O week 2014 Zermatt
To some extent orienteering probably is a middle class sport (as are the other races mentioned). For this however rather than middle classness it's more that Switzerland is just a ridiculously expensive country, and Zermatt in particular is at the high end of that. Nice if you can afford it, but obviously not everyone will be able to.

I daresay most folk don't do any of the above every weekend, nor 5 or six days in a row.
Of course orienteering's middle class- it can't help itself - "brains over braun and all that" but I agree Switzerland IS probably the most expensive place to orienteer in the whole wide world.
I'd rather spread my dosh wider and enjoy the likes of the Takas 5 days, Tallin City races etc Or enjoy the craic of a good O'Ringen (no not the overbulky Swedish one - you can have too much of a good thing you know!)
