Yeah I feel sorry for all those orienteers with years of major event management experience who missed out on this opportunity... they must be, they must be.... oh hang on...

Re: New Major Events Manager
I don't see it as a particular problem if someone doesn't have a lot of orienteering experience for this role. The only thing particularly unique about an orienteering event are the actual courses - and that is the domain of the planner and controller. The organiser just sorts out everything that fits round about the courses and for that they just need to be .... a good organiser (and communicator). It might even bring a fresh approach to things if they come from a different organising background.

Re: New Major Events Manager
That's great, as long whoever's in charge understands that there are technical standards, and allows the planner and controller to deliver them. The risk is that event logistics and presentation take priority, the planner and controller get pushed way down the pecking order, and the courses turn out to be any old sh1te on a map ( see also Run Challenge )

Re: New Major Events Manager
I'll give you a slight variation on that. If the presentation isn't considered the content is irrelevant and no-one will experience even the most brilliant of courses.
It is a team exercise.
I'll also point out that no qualified controller worth his/her salt will allow substandard courses (that is ones that do not conform with the guidelines) and a good planner will plan good courses even if he is (for example) asked to have 75 spectator controls (to take things to a ridiculous level)
and we all agree that the problem with RunChallenge seems to be that the organisers aren't orienteers -don't we? Sally will be surrounded by experienced planners, organisers and controllers -and if they don't seem to make sense to her there are lots of others willing to advise (One of whom even posts here and seems to have a degree of authority in BOF -do you agree Spookster?)

Too much negativity Greywolf - it is perhaps time that orienteering worked on its presentation instead of getting bogged down in technical minutia.

Re: New Major Events Manager
I controlled one of BOF's major events and the event manager wanted to change the courses for spectator value. As controller I decided the idea was dangerous for the juniors so declined the invitation.......
It will be difficult for an organizer with their remit of presentation etc to keep their noses out of the forest... but good luck
