Run Challenge
Anybody been to one? According to the website twelve people have run in the ten 'giant treasure hunts' so far - or maybe the results are just slow going online

Do you mean these?

@ £22 for an 8 mile run, I think I might give it a miss - and you don't even get a map to take home

Re: Run Challenge
According to our local paper, they're a joint initiative between The National Trust and British Orienteering. Just wondered if they were worth taking the grandchildren to.

It's a shame orienteers aren't encouraged to do these, especially all those newcomers that went to the community nights that SportEngland paid for over the last 3 years.
RunChallenge seems to have been launched. There is a website www.RunChallenge.org.uk with details or where these sessions will be held. There is one per week throughout the summer in the Lake District. It is a shame that these aren't on the British Orienteering events list and that there is no information whatsoever about them on the BOF website. It is always possible that orienteers might enjoy them, especially the ones that have got into the sport via the Community nights.

British Orienteering Hi, yes, RunChallenge and Xplorer have both been launched, many weeks ago in several locations around the country. Existing orienteers are of course welcome, but they're not the primary target market for these new projects, and hence the main British Orienteering website isn't used as an advertising channel for them. The intention is to get new people trying these other types of navigational challenge, and then point them towards "mainstream orienteering". MW

It's also a pity that BO hasn't consulted with the local clubs in the areas that these events have been established. A number of the Cumbrian events have been organised within the area covered by WCOC. These events have been organised on Thursdays, which is the night used for the weekly WCOC events. Not only are these events unintentionally competing with our established events, there is no incentive for the club to promote the events and it is unlikely that members would support these events or be available to promote our club at the events.

Re: Run Challenge
I can't see any of the above on the Facebook page, so I have to assume that they don't want any connection or mention of it with British Orienteering and have deleted it.
So that raises the question if it's OK for the official body representing orienteering in Great Britain to be conducting and promoting a business that is unrelated to orienteering?
It could also be argued that it is in competition with established clubs.
If it's supposed to be an introduction to orienteering and to drive people to established clubs surely there should be some cross marketing?
I'm sure that the money for all this has come from outside orienteering, but I can't help feeling that we now are being run by a organisation that doesn't have any interest in orienteering. If the main aim of this project is to increase participation and awareness of orienteering it's going to fail if it doesn't show any connection to orienteering. If that isn't the main aim, why on earth is OUR organisation wasting time and resources developing it?

The post is still there, it hasn't been deleted. It was posted by someone other than British Orienteering, so you need to switch Timeline view to Posts By Others (like any other Facebook page).

No, it hasn't been deleted, you just need to look for the "posts by others" Paul.

No, it doesn't. And these projects are clearly not unrelated to orienteering.

Re: Run Challenge
I admit my ignorance of Facebook, I hate it but need to access it to find out info missing from some web sites.
Doesn't change the issue of why Run Challenge isn't promoted on the British Orienteering site and the lack of co-ordination with local orienteering clubs.
I shouldn't really care, as it's an England only enterprise, but sometimes I remember that British Orienteering is also supposed to control what happens in Scotland and that's why I care.

Re: Run Challenge
Just looked at the runchallange website and under clubs there is zero mention of any orienteering club that I can see..... So it's obviously not working to support local clubs.... Maybe it helps keep someone in a job.... Maybe that is the present function of BOF?

Re: Run Challenge
Surely we were all aware of the initiative by British Orienteering for this and the similar Xplorer?
BO have been clear for some time about their plan to copy netball by introducing versions of the sport not directly associated with the existing club structure. In that sport it has been successful in bringing in a lot of new people - and thereby increased the membership of clubs.
I think clashes with existing club activities are a mistake but we're not the target audience are we?
I'm going to give them a chance -at least the NGB is trying to make things happen- and open welcoming arms to anyone who comes along to our events as a result
