I bought myself some fancy fingerless/mitten combi gloves for xmas, only to realise that the flaps were held back by extremely strong magnets. I didn't buy them for orienteering, but did want to wear them on a few compass training sessions. I've taken the magnets out and now I'll have to sew a button on the mits, or velcro maybe.
I also had a case for my phone that had a magnet fastener - took me a while to realise that this was affecting the compass in the phone and any apps that used it (eg google skymap). Again, velcro to the rescue.

Beware of Emit brikkes - I have learned to always carry it in the other hand to my compass

if your nephew buys you a little compass for Christmas that goes on your watch strap - don't wear it on the wrist next your thumb compass else you get a 56 degree error
