£2.3M between 12,000 active orienteers. That's £2000 each - a heck of a lot of money in a recession.

Ah, but what about the 52,988,000 non-orienteers in England? Some of it's for them.

Who here knows what exciting projects are coming along in the mountaineering world that has led to BMC getting £3m in this funding round, compared to £1.4m last time? They must have some strong participation growth predictions.

Firstly, well done to the BO chaps involved. getting "flat cash" is great in this economic climate even if some other sports got a bit more (presumably to keep up their momentum as they are olympic sports).

Looking at http://www.sportengland.org/pdf/Sport%20England%20NGB%20Investment%202009-13.pdf :

• a cursory glance at the split between Participation and Talent shows orienteering with 30% of its cash for Talent which is a pretty good ratio compared to other sports.
• Football gets an increase of 4.4 million, presumably since there is no so little money in the sport that the top players are having to reduce their salaries to hundreds of k per week. Anyone know why we are funding "Talent" for football - surely it is in the best interests of the clubs to foot that bill.

I like the idea of the 2k per person, but my sums suggest 2.3 million divided by 12 thousand active orienteers is a little under 200 per person over 5 years. So 40 per year which doesn't sound so much. Of course if the person suggesting 2k lacks Talent (at least in his maths) then it is presumably the Community pot he is looking at then the sums work out at under 30. BTW does the figure of 12,000 cover GB+NI or just England?

The £2.3m is split roughly £1.6m towards Participation, and £0.7m towards Talent.

Participation means the development projects (including Community-O+, Virtual Orienteering) and development of events and competitions.

Talent means the talent pathway (Talent Identification, Talent Development, Elite Development).
